DE works on shelled bugs because it screw up their joints. Think of sand in the gearbox.
Boric acid isn't used for rodents. They're too big and would have to eat a *lot* of it. That's the beauty of Boric Acid. Besides it being cheap, it is relatively save around people and pets. It's intended for insects, that think it food and will cart it off to their colonies dehydrating the whole shebang.
Varmint are vermin:

Verner would have needed an AK-47.

And ether is extremely flammable.
A static spark will ignite it...and does many times.

A friend of mine has an excellent solution to wasps: put a small fan outside the nest, maybe a 3", 5000 RPM fan. They all move in to attack the fan, which, of course, doesn't end well for them. :-)
Evidently, it also works on ants.

The ants have less mass, so, though they do get 'passed' through the fan, the less often undergo much damage, whereas the wasp would certainly 'get bent' over it.
I hope you don't have that happen again, but if you do, try putting a small bowl filled with ammonia in there. The fumes will drive the racoon out pdq. From what I have heard, it works better than mothballs. From what I have *seen* it works VERY fast for squirrels in the furnace flue.

What's "DE"?
Once, while I was in the USAF (early 1970's), I went to Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS for supplementary training on new systems before I went overseas. I rented a litle bungalow just off-base, just for the duration.
They have cockroaches down there that could carry away a braunschweiger sandwich!
I got a spray can of "Black Flag", and sprayed it in all the nooks and crannies, but it didn't seem to make any difference. I didn't try "roach motel" thingies, because these roaches wouldn't fit through the little holes.
So I took a couple of saltine crackers, laid them in the corners and such, and saturated them with the Black Flag spray stuff. The next day, I saw chew marks in the crackers, and not a sign of a cockroach since. :-)
I don't know if they still sell Black Flag.
Cheers! Rich
Bugs aren't "varmint", because "varmint" is singular. Vermin is its plural, which bugs usually are. ;-)
Hope This Helps! Rich

Actually Palmetto beetles, no?
Likely not the same formula. They've wimped down everything.

'A bug' is singular.

I still have a quart bottle of "Chloridane" from Ortho, from the early seventies. Long since out of production.
One tablespoon to an entire gallon of water.
