Varmint Control

Is there such a thing as an air rifle that shoots bird-shot?

We're getting over-run with rabbits, some kind of chipmunk-looking thingy and a raccoon greeted me on the patio a few days ago... trying to come in the doggie door!!

If I fired a shot gun in this neighborhood the resulting echo from the surrounding hills would bring the cops in five seconds, plus knock holes in fences :-(

There used to be a .22 rimfire round with #11 shot available, should be a lot quieter

You can shoot vermin with a pellet gun.

Certainly. But something that's running is easier to hit with bird-shot. "Kill" isn't necessary, I just want the varmints to recognize an "unfriendly zone" ;-)

Buy an outdoor-compatible large dog?

(Given the newsgroup topic, "large robot dog" would be appropriate ;)

Get a paintball gun. Discourages the deer too, if you hit them while they're running away.

Why not try some of the non-lethal methods listed here in this book:

With a little bit of engineering creativity, perhaps some electronics could be added to the methods described.

You should be able to preview this book on Google Books.

Ewwwwwh!

I can just see how SWMBO will react to paint-ball marks on the walls :-(

To use on the critters? Fill it with turpentine, first! :)

Just learn how to shoot, and you can do them with a .22. I once watched a guy take two squirrels out of trees, and a running rabbit in the scrub at about 10-15 paces. I also watched them skin and gut the animals, but they didn't invite me for dinner. ;-)

Just empty the chamber pot on the perimeter of the garden each morning. It sends a pheromone signal: "Large Carnivores Live Here".

And don't top-post.

Hope This Helps! Rich

Actually do own a pressure washer... bought it recently to clear some patio scuppers that had clogged. But the "critters" would run on start-up ;-)

doubtful. It certainly wouldn't be powerful enough for varmint hunting. very inhumane.

saw one of those on America's Funniest Videos. It stole their throw rug from in front of the door, wasn't the first rug it stole.

Crossbows are quiet. But have a limited rate of fire.

Oh,you could use subsonic .22's. Or apply for a suppressor to fit a rifle....if your state permits them.

BTW,rabbits are good eating.

What you need are some natural controls for such animals, like minks, ferrets, maybe a bobcat for the raccoon.... 8-)
