Bird shot (without a shotun to drive it) is not going to be an improvement over pellets for those things - you want a serious pellet gun and practice enough to hit what you aim at. Use the larger caliber (.22 or .25) subsonic versions rather than the smaller caliber (.17) supersonic (or nearer-sonic) versions. However, a pellet gun with enough power to be useful hunting may still get the neighbors excited - they are not silent by any means.
I may just go into training for dealing with leftist weenies... trap a rabbit, then leave in the sun as an example for those yet to be trapped ;-)

Lead fouling is the product of a much higher velocity IN THE BARELL, you idiot, AND it also utilizes components of the propellant medium from the previous firing(s) to abrade the barrel with. The first shot on a freshly cleaned gun with lead bullets leaves no lead in the barrel. Subsequent shots DO, as the debris in the barrel increases the friction between the slug and the barrel and lead gets "galled" off as it traverses up the barrel.
A low velocity lubricated slug, which pellets in an air powered system are, is NOT going to abrade ANY barrel, including the brass lined barrels they used to use ALL the time, any time soon. There is no galling, virtually ever.
It is just simply a much less aggressive process.
As far as cleaning goes, very little lead is gleaned off of the projectiles because less heat is generated, by the fact that they are well lubricated, AND the lower velocity up the barrel, and the lack of abrasive elements like previously burned propellant product debris. Unlike a powder actuate ballistic system where the projectile continues to accelerate as the gasses expand behind it expand, all the way up the barrel and that is proven by the fact that the same round, fired through two different barrel lengths yields two different muzzle velocities. The same cannot be said for air powered ballistic systems. The pressure is the same from the moment of valve actuation on, and actually decreases as the projectile moves up the barrel and more space is left for the gas "charge".
