High power - for about 5 nanoseconds. Inherently low duty cycle pulsed due to the physics of the lasing energy levels. Blows holes in - nothing. Makes most paper glow blue, due to "brighteners" (florescent molecules) in most paper to make it whiter. Never so much as a scorch mark on the paper. Pumps dye lasers if you'd like a visible beam. The beam is not particularly well organized, as lasers go. Other than potentially putting your eye out if you don't wear goggles or electrocuting you if you are stupid with it, pretty much non-hazardous.

I've built these about 84 times with (mostly) freshmen college students (if I recall the SA design correctly, ours was somewhat more effective, as we used a nice, and rather spendy, thyratron).

If you want to cook things with a laser you can't see, use a CO2 laser, just like the folks that heat-treat steel.

Combine R/C model tank, working gun (air pistol?), wireless camera, and an IR laser pointer to make fun and effective varmint control. :-)

Or for lower cost, I've gotten good results with at wireless camera and a rifle. Usually gently opening the door and sticking the gun out doesn't scare off the varmints.

Actually,from Googling(research!),I've found that air gun shooters prefer to keep velocities around 900 FPS,as the higher speeds make much more drag,and less accuracy.
