Varmint Control

The cats stay outdoors and we bring it in most nights now, except if we forget.

I'll use my 338 Win. Mag. for bears. Actually there are no bears around here, plenty of coyotes and white tail Deer though.

If the R/C vehicle scares them off, that's great. If an airsoft gun does the trick, that's great too. Skunks don't seem to scare off, they seem to have an attitude that nothing will mess with them because of the stink they can make. I don't mind them being in the area but I don't want to be afraid to walk out the door because they have taken over the place.

An R/C vehicle chasing them everytime they come around might do the trick, once they've been chased they might be scared to come around at the sight of the vehicle.

After your posts on 9mm 900fps airguns I didn't know you were opposed to doing harm to varmints. There have been reports of people being attacked and bitten by skunks around here, when they get in my carport that's too close for comfort.

They carry the same entry/exit wound characteristics too. Goes in small, and comes out big, carrying a lot of flesh with it. Definitely gets kills, even if the critter runs off, it will very likely die in short order.

Yes, but if you are killing varmint, the difference between a 1 inch group, and getting kills becomes more apparent. I'll take the impact force over a grouping that is only a mere half inch smaller any day.

Odd how they can easily distinguish between animated objects, and inanimate objects, even if they have motion. Their lack of fear of these object, however, is the key to their demise.

Use strike anywhere match heads, and rocket igniters to remotely cause little bursts that will scare them off for good. Also small electrical nodes for applying the occasional jolt will work as well.

I oppose UNnecessary violence to varmints. You draw them to you by leaving food out,then you want to shoot them. It'd be different if they were coming around for natural reasons.

The two cats I have came from their mother that most likely got dumped in the area. The mother cat came up to the house hungry, we fed it and enjoyed having it around. The mother cat is gone and two of it's adult children are still here. We didn't ask for them or make an effort to own a pet cat, just a nice stray that was hungry, we fed it. We had some ducks, I think the Coyotes got them, some reason they never bothered the cats.

Just the skunks came around to eat the cat food, for years we fed the cats outside and didn't have a problem until this year. Then we started putting the food up at night. Now that the food is rarely forgotten at night, haven't had that many varmints coming around. If they do I try to chase them away without harm first, if that doesn't work, I shoot. A few times I just shot into a tree with my 22-250, it's very loud and if that does the trick then we all get along fine.

I started killing rats with a .22 when I was seven. They'd come up from the brook to steal grain from my grandmother's chicken coop and pen. The first thing I was taught was never shoot off cover. Second thing, if a dead rat ended up IN the pen, remove it immediately, so the chickens wouldn't eat lead.

I used to gather the eggs and broadcast the grain early in the morning. Am I responsible for the rats coming into the kill zone? I'm 74 now. Looking back, I feel no guilt.

They way Jim puts it, he'd be a hypocrite if he ever used bug spray. Lysol! you attract germs and then kill them with Lysol! :-) Many always find fault with what others are doing and can't see their own hypocrisy.
