A recent discovery (for me), soapy water kills bugs pretty well, we've been killing wasps that have nests around the house. Saves big $ over wasp spray. I got the idea after folks on the tractor group mentioning that soapy water works for removing ticks, it blocks their ability to breathe through their skin.

It's possible to buy the complete set of The Amateur Scientist on CD-ROM - I got a copy a few years ago, and it's still in print. The column included plans for at least *three* types of laser, at various points.

I've heard that borax works, but the pesticide is boric acid. It's somewhat less lethal (to humans) as NaCl. Bugs think it's sugar and bring it back to the queen. It's a desiccant, so the colony shrivels up and dies.

I'm not sure it's reasonable to suggest that a rat can "steal" anything

-- they don't have any concept of property and they're just looking for food because they're hungry.

I don't have any problem with your killing the rats, though.

I do appreciate the care you have offered the cats.

Wildlife is such that if they do not find shelter or food, they move on.

All the idiots here who are recommending guns as the general solution have way too much time on their hands.

Reminds me of the "I have a hammer so every problem looks like a nail" syndrome.

When I do have a wildlife problem (which is rare since I do not feed them), I use a live trap to catch the offender while I spend my time at more productive purposes.

It is both humane and a better use of my time than sitting waiting for hours with a gun pretending to be Davy Crockett.
