WHOA! Microsoft strikes again...

HandWashPaste? :) Hey, German is not so hard after all :D

Oh! What happened?

I put the car on a jackstand on the side I was working on. I was mostly working to the side and above the car, not below it. I also put some wheel chock equivalents so the car couldn't roll down the driveway.

Thanks for looking out for me tho!

Regards,

Michael

Until it died a few weeks ago I had a little office server that runs on a Linux OS. In order to configure it you needed ... a Windows computer.

That reminds me. I'm almost out.

German is like Lego, you can combine words as needed and make a new one that way. It's also usually a very logical language. For example:

Shoe = Schuh Glove = Handschuh ("hand shoe") Brake pad = Bremsschuh ("brake shoe")

Captain of a steam boat in the employ of the Danube Steam Boat Company:

Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitaen

Not sure. Something moved to where it wasn't supposed to and crushed him. His wife couldn't talk about any details, too tough.

When I was young and "invincible" I told my mom I'd take the transmission out of her DAF and look what broke in there. Those had CVT before anyone else, even in the 60's. But those transmissions were inefficient and also heavy. I jacked it up, crawled underneath, loosened all the bolts and ... let it drop on my belly. Took my breath away for a few seconds but luckily only a few seconds and it didn't crush anything inside me. I should have found out about its weight before doing that but Internet didn't exist.

I see "kapitaen" but everything else might as well be in Russian, to me :p

hot steam = "fahrt?" Hey it's just like English! :)

If you loosened the bolts but didn't remove them, perhaps the pan would have given you some warning first?

It's also no fun to take a bath in transmission fluid.

I thought about also dropping the trans pan on my car, but then realized the mystery oil leak wasn't trans oil but was leaking from *above*. Ahh, I have to re-do the valve cover gasket.

See! And then people say "I cannot switch to Linux because of drivers, I stay with Windows because driver support is great!".

But in fact it isn't that great.

That is why running a VM is sometimes a good solution.

More electric: Dreiphasenwechselstromkilowattstundenmesser Three-phase alternating current kilowatt-hour meter.

The same beast lives in Finnish (maybe borrowed from German): kolmivaihevaihtovirtakilowattituntimittari.

snipped-for-privacy@gmail.com prodded the keyboard with:

A friend of mine was working under his van, propped up on a pair of axle stands, lucky for him the wheels were still on. One stand collapsed and he ended up with several broken ribs, one wrist broken and a shoulder.

Not nice at all.

Not a long as his wife's characterisation

Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitaensgemahlin

His wife. It's the classic example, dredged from my science German lessons back in 1961.

Finnish is a bit odd. Not as odd as Basque, but I never had to study science Basque - Russian was bad enough.

Agreed, it should have gone the way of the dinosaurs aeons ago. Maybe it has survived because here, North of 60 degrees, it has been in deep freeze.

The only language that resembles Finnish is Estonian.

There is a free program, GWX Control Panel, that I have been using for mont hs that is designed to prevent Windows 10 installation (unless you decide y ou want it). I installed it on my wife's computer too. I also set the Windo ws update option so that we get notifications of updates, but not automatic installation. However, I don't trust that setting to prevent installation of Windows 10 which is why we use GWX Control Panel.

And Hungarian, isn't it? Well I don't think Finns and Hungarians can understand eachother, but I read that these languages have a similar structure.

But it works.

No, it works. Switching is an unknown, at best.

And Old Hungarian, which is usually taken to be Finno-Ugric.

What's that about Donald Trump? ;-)

That's the difference between English and German. In English, one puts words together with spaces to form sentences. In German, one puts words together to get other words.

When I worked on my cars (poor college kid) I'd use redundant jacks or jack stands. I'd also make sure they were way over-sized for the job.

Think ahead. "What would happen if..."

Not for Joerg, it seems!

Once the old box fails you will need to do something.

Right. At a distance, Hungarian sounds familiar, but I do not understand a word.

Not as secure, though. Modern malware toolkits can infect the firmware of the USB drive, whereas on a DVD there's nothing to infect.

GWX Control Panel doesn't turn off the spyware ("telemetry") updates, though, so beware.
