Toshiba presents first methanol mp3 players, 35 and 60 hours on a refill

OK, I admit, I seem to have overreacted a bit, but whenever I've heard of methanol as fuel, it seems that they always emphasize how careful you have to be with it.

Thanks, Rich

OK, please demonstrate. See if you can get your hands on a quart of methanol, drink it, and write back with your results.

Thanks, Rich

Yet again showing how practically useless MSDSs are. You have to bathe in it practically.

Well, not quite... Anyway, while surfing, I found

Which looks like a far more balanced hazards site than MSDS.

Anyway, let's say that the MP3 player used .1W, for a total of about 16KJ. That's about 2cc of methanol even with 25% efficiency.

Pretty much all of it needs to get into your body to do much harm.

That site mentions only one death due to dermal absorbtion.

In several minutes of searching I've been unable to find a report of a death or blindness due to methanol poisoning from aeromodelling or other recreations that involve methanol fueled engines. And you're talking of hundreds of thousands of users, with much less controlled fuelling systems, in much larger quantities.

I read in sci.electronics.design that Rich Grise wrote (in ) about 'Toshiba presents first methanol mp3 players, 35 and 60 hours on a refill', on Mon, 19 Sep 2005:

That ISN'T what the site you cited says:

Skin: May cause skin irritation.

Ingestion: May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed.

You'd have to wallow in it to absorb enough to have serious internal effects. And you'd not want to do that, because you'd be coughing and crying quite quickly.

These safety data sheets usually don't even mention aversive effects, that 'persuade' you to depart in haste from the hazardous material. Equally, they don't distinguish between the degree of risk presented by that sort of substance and those that you don't sense (or hardly sense) until they incapacitate you.

Ian Stirl>> I wonder how they will package the fuel?

[Grise]
[hanson] This Toshiba concept is utterly cool! -- That's innovation! But, ahahaha... Ian and Rich, have you 2 just been brainwashed by the enviros or are you 2 self-incandescant class 3 enviros?

Methanol was sold as Moonshine during the prohibition and folks drank it by the quart, daily, without getting anything but gassed and terribly hung over. Agreed, 50% got side effects, like going blind, after prolonged guzzling and pigging out on it... Then the pendulum swung and the green s**ts introduced broad band paranoia and doom scares about everything, EVERYTHING! And now several Euro states have banned using MeOH. OTOH, research is actively continuing on a large scale to find cheaper conversion methods to turn Methane from the Arabian Oilfields into Methanol which can be transported easier with less cost/risk by super tankers half-ways around the world.... So, watch anything that is labeled green/organic or "enviro" with the same mistrust, and misgiving you would have when slip-sliding on a plane of green s*it. Don't fall for enviro turds. Environmentalism is a con! hanson

PS: Modern, attributal definitions of enviro classifications: Class (1) Green s*it(s): ...are the ones who advocate, promote, support, legalize, institute and extort the permit charges, the user fees, the enviro surtaxes and the CO2/Carbon tax, all reflected in HIGHER PRICES of goods and services!, and being responsible for much of the OUT-SOURCING! Class (2) Green turd(s):... are the ones who are recipients and beneficiaries from the lootings of (1), directly or indirectly. Class (3) Little green idiot(s):.. are the unpaid, well-meaning ones who think they do something for the "environment", when in fact they are only the enablers and facilitators for (2) who are harvesting the green $$$ that (1) has extorted.

Great way to get a dose of LSD in you (I'm told.) Here one instant, there the next. :-)

You obviously missed the point of my post. I am not in fact concerned that there is a risk of setting children on fire. I was stating that these sorts of reasons might well be put forward as to why you can't buy a $30 (guess) 99.99% 1l methanol bottle, and have enough to refill it for life, but will be sold a 10ml refilling tool for $3 or so.

Ah, globalization, and the issues to be resolved.

Given the size of this thing, it would be no more dangerous than carrying a miniature bottle of over-proof rum. There is more danger in the drinks cart than in one of these devices.

Kernel? As in originator of KFC??

Moonshine contained only a few per cent of methanol, like methylated spirits.

Exactly. Think like your man the late-middle-English pedant, just as English is becoming widely written and read. He thinks that "My Lord Of Oxenfordes Demesne" (the -s being a straightforward Germanic genetive ending) is a contraction of "My Lord of Oxenforde His Demesne". So he marks it with an apostrophe, leading eventually to grocer's. But he couldn't force this misconception onto "his" (recursion), "hers" (her his?) "ours" (our his) etc. so they remained as (very modified ) Germanic rooted inflections.

In point of fact, the apostrophe adds nothing to the sense, ease of reading or understanding etc. etc. (Evidence- no other European language needs it.) It acts only as a trap for the unwary. Like "shall"/ "will" it is an idiotic artificial construct which should be strangled. Aboli'sh the po'sse'ssive apo'strophe's!

I read in sci.electronics.design that Paul Burke wrote (in ) about 'isopropyl alcohol and Kerosine.', on Tue, 20 Sep 2005:

Well, not for showing possession, but, for example, Dutch uses the apostrophe in forming plurals of 'foreign' words, such as "camera's". The British 'greengrocer's apostrophe' is alive and well and living in the Netherlands. (;-)

Yes, I just did some checking in the news in Dutch, and indeed the idiots use 's for plural. The good thing is that there is a recommendation to teach only in English in the universities. What is interesting is that I did not notice it, while reading it a thousand times. Even more interesting is if I have used it in correspondence.... LOL Would they have DARED to object? hehe But now you made me curious: I did some googling, and find both. Look here:

Maybe the spelling was changed some time after I left school, they come up with new ideas every few years....

Anyways Dutch is redundant, should be outlawed LOL. _________________________________________ Usenet Zone Free Binaries Usenet Server More than 140,000 groups Unlimited download

I think you might be thinking of DMSO - something very different!

DHMO doesn't have much effect on the rate of LSD absorption at all. A little wine or beer can help, however. ;-P

Cheers! Rich

Well, the plural with apostrophe is what I was told by an IEC Dutch person, and I've seen it often since then.
