What does "ECL based 555 type" mean?
Just take an MC12061, replace XTAL with a C, add resistors from each crystal node to ground... voila, a very fast 555... even with a TTL output.
There was a PECL version on my MC4024 voltage-controlled multivibrator, but I can't locate it now... maybe no longer made. The MC4024 is actually PECL internally, with a translator to TTL. It'll do ~30MHz, voltage-controlled about 3.5:1 (or more) tuning range. ...Jim Thompson

You sound like a guy we have employed. We call him the screw driver or golden child, because he has blond hair. If you were to listen to him you'd swear there isn't anything on this planet he does not know about and he has done things in his life time that would take most of us a spanned of 200 or more years to achieve..
He even goes out of his way to make comments about successful people we deal with are wrong in their assessments of many things we pay good money for.
Yup, he's a walking wonder and everything that he has actually done has been nothing but thumbs and fingers and mostly failures but yet he still has the nerve to say that others that are successful in their fields make gross mistakes, something that he claims he can pick up on and do better of course.

This kind of brings a smile to my space actually, because today I called him out on the carpet on several things that has been spewing out of his mouth. He was very quiet for the rest of the day. Of course, I did this in front of every one else to see. I know it's only temporary, for he'll go home and sit on google, like you do, and stuff some more unreliable information in his head that he only understands a small percentage of to pollute the work front tomorrow..

The MC4024/MC4044 pair were useful when they first appeared, and I used them back in 1972. That they were both TTL-compatible didn't make them any easier to use. The 4046 killed any market they might have had
- the 4046 VCO wasn't as fast, and none of the modern variants can get up to 30MHz either, but market doesn't seem to have been all that enthusiastic about running the VCO that fast.

I misspoke, the driver runs _off_ a 9V supply see the DP8392A data sheet it seems to turn most of the input power into heat.
