The 'reset' of you needs something alright. The need is for far more than insight into any reality.

You cannot blame the reason you have no access to reality on others.

Interesting claim. I wonder if he thinks I'm lying about being left- handed - but anybody who had ever seen me write anything would know that I wasn't - or that I'm lying about actually using my left hand. Either way he's wrong.

The reason that I can't access your "reality" is that it exists only inside your skull.

You may need resetting. The rest of the world seems to be more or less okay - though Jim-out-of-touch-with-reality-Thompson does seem to have the occasional problem. Since he long since kill-filed me, he isn't going to argue about that, because I'm part of the reality that he doesn't want to keep in touch with.

No. He has his own cube, 120 square feet. And several computers, a big workbench, two desks, two whiteboards, and lots of test equipment and JTAG things and eval boards and such. We mostly leave one another alone, unless something important or cool comes up. It's called "work", if you can remember back that far.

How can you stand being so useless?

Too mad Sloman doesn't have a JTAG port. Then we could program some common sense into him, and take him from a bitter old ass to someone that's useful to society.

Sure I can, but what I called work did seem to involve a lot of talking to other people. We were developing new stuff, rather than turning the crank on a much-the-same new product once a fortnight, so there was quite a lot to work out between us.

At EMI you could measure the interest by the cups of half-drunk cold coffee lying around - it takes a respectable amount of interest to distract somebody when they are half-way through drinking their cup of coffee, almost as much as it did distract the senior engineers from telling the junior engineers that they should wash up and put away their coffee cups, rather than leaving them lying around.

I get depressed, which takes the edge off it.

Well, we design electronics, year after year, so I suppose you could argue that we do nothing new. But it does keep us fed and amused.

So use some of that massive intelligence to make things better.

What happened to the reset of the world?

You know nothing about "the rest of the world", much less what "they" think.

Hey, I just bought a product (a DC dimmer) that had a bunch of old jellybean favorites in it.. an SMT 1N4007, a 7805, an LM358 AND a 555.

Guess which one was playing the part of gate driver for the 80A MOSFET...

It works better at higher voltages. They do have 240 in Europe.
