Another junker I bought with the hopes of fixing up. The problem with this one is that the DVD player does not respond - door doesn't open, disc motor won't start, etc. VCR section works fine, and switching to DVD mode displays the "DVD Video" logo on screen. 12V and all other supplies going to the DVD board seem fine. My guess at this point would be the LA6560 motor control IC - would I be right? And would anyone happen to have a junker with a good board? I really don't feel like changing one of these blasted surface IC's. Thanks.

It's not too hard, just cut some aluminum flashing or something similar to make a heat shield to cover adjacent components, then use a heat gun to heat up the chip until the solder melts and pop it off with a small screwdriver.
So you think it probably is the IC? Also, wouldn't such heat have the potential to damage the replacement IC?

Cut the leads from the chip on the board right next to the chip with a sharp knife . Remove the chip body then clean the leads away with solder wick . glue new chip on then solder the new chip up and apply solder wick over the new solder job to clean up any bridges .
