DVD stops playing half way through DVD

Model - HITACHI DV-P250. This DVD player stops playing DVD's, can be anywhere on the disc, the screen freezes, sometimes it starts playing again, sometimes it locks up completely and goes into standby mode. Anyone got any ideas ?

DAZ9643: Based on your posting here are some "wild" guesses:

  1. Bad DVD.... try others
  2. Dirty lens
  3. Debris in gears and laser sled
  4. Faulty spindle motor
  5. Bad laser control circuitry.
  6. High ESR electrolytics in the SMPS or control circuitry. Go to the website for this newsgrouup at

there, with some searching, you will find a wealth of troubleshooting and repair tips..... or if that doesn't help, TAKE it to a repair shop for, at the very least, a repair cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with facts instead of guesses.

Sofie's right, but my guess is simply a bad laser - this is the most common failure on these players, and the Hitachi players are not among the best in this regard.

Halfway through the disc though? In my experience bad laser causes problems all over the place, first appearing with marginal or scratched discs.

Absolutely 1/2 way throught the disc. Seen it many times. It seems the output of some (defective) lasers weaken as they warm up a bit, the output gets noisier, data stream gets choppy or interrupted. It's very common for example, to have a player malfunction 35 or so minutes into a movie.

I just repaired a Toshiba DVD player that would stop playing intermittently. It was usually fine at first, but would start pausing more and more as you played the disc. It turned out to have a cracked gear on the sled motor. Andy Cuffe
