Question about magnetism

Forgive me if this is not the most appropriate group to ask this one in... but can someone tell me how to demagnetize a magnet somewhat?

It's an ordinary metal bar magnet. It's too powerful for my needs and I need to demagnetize it by about 50%.

Is the answer to strap it to another magnet with th epoles oritented

+to+ and - to - ?

Many thanks,

Al

No, that'll just make it stronger. The easiest way to make it
weaker is to shunt it. Get some nails and lay them across the
poles, north to south, until the field weakens to where you need it
to be.

Hi John, Thanks for the reply. Due to the design of the device, the magnet in question is already sandwiched between two steel plates. Isn't that the same thing as what you are describing, in effect?

Depends.

If it's like this:

-------------- | STEEL PLATE | -------------- |N MAGNET S| -------------- | STEEL PLATE | --------------

yes, but if it's like this:

-------------- | STEEL PLATE | -------------- | N | | MAGNET | | S | -------------- | STEEL PLATE | --------------

no.
