We live in the US and have three wheeled trash containers:

Black: garbage, mostly incinerated; no toxics

Blue: recyclables

Green: yard waste, food, anything compostable

They are picked up every Tuesday morning. The blue bin gets mixed paper, metal, and plastic, and they are machine+hand separated by the trash company for recycling.

Additionally, we can make two calls a year for free pickup of big stuff, furniture and general junk, and have lots of places we can take electronics, paint, used motor oil, batteries, and toxics.

There's a 5-cent deposit on soda cans and bottles, and most neighborhoods have someone who comes by early in the morning and digs those out of the recycling bin before it's collected. Ours is a nice old Chinese lady. If there was a similar but larger deposit on electronics, we wouldn't need ROHS, or at least the lead-free part.

We have the blue (Tuesday) and the green (Friday) containers picked up by a truck with big hydraulically activated "hands".

And we have semi-annual toxic drop-offs, for paint, tires, car batteries, etc.

I take ours to the "transfer station". Thay charge for household refuse ($2.75/30 gal.) and constructions materials ($6/30 gal.) cost but recycles are free, which includes glass, plastic, textiles, and metal, with the exception of stuff that contains refrigerant.

I could have puck up service, but it's just as easy for me to take it to the "dump" and cheaper.

We give what little we have anymore to the scouts, whichever variety is raising money. There's always talk about raising it to $.10, but there's little point. There's very little laying around in the road, for long.

We have two houses about 50 miles apart. Here we have grey for trash, blue for recycables, and anything you want for yard waste. At the other house, it is black for trash, grey for recyclables, and green for yard waste.

I get two coupons a year that allow me to bring in a car or pickup load to one of several trash collection/sorting sites. The city used to run an annual cleanup day where anyone could bring in just about anything to two or three temporary sites. That was much better in my mind.

There is also a toxic-trash pickup every Saturday at the city truck yard.

We save every thing with CRV value and haul it in when we get a pickup load. The trip last month netted $93.

Yes, I forgot yard waste. Ours is free, under 3yds per day at the local transfer station, and 6yds/day at the one about five miles further. Their restrictions are 6' length and 2' diameter. I took a pickup-full of a tree that came down in my back yard last winter. Fortunately it didn't hit the house. The wind was too strong.

I'm not arguing, just stating my position on the PC crap. :)

Remember, that the garbage burners don't (or didn't) believe in recycling. I remember a lot of stuff in Forbes' Magazine 10-15 years ago (before the dot.com bubble turned the mag into sycophantic fiction) where there was a steady stream of anti-recycling/pro-incinerator articles. (Which, it turns out were largely written by a "journalist" invested in incinerator companies).

So, to repeat the point, de-leading waste isn't just a smelly hippy thing. (Greenpeace has a big anti-incinerator campaign, looks they're working both sides). It also has the backing of people (with more money) involved in it. And I I think a fair amount of bureaucratic inertia. It would be interesting to track and see in what industry the responsible government officials get their next jobs/consultancies after they retire.
