First, maybe you wouldn't be forced into it if you dealt with it when it started. Inject some common sense into EU politics, for crying out loud.
Lead is gasoline is NO parallel to lead in electronics. Different form, completely metallic on PCB's is no where near the particulates spewed by travelling vehichles in its potential to pollute. Sorry, you are far off base. But even if you were accurate (again, you are not), the cost of hardened valve seats (a MUST for unleaded gas long term) is paltry in comparison to what lead free solder is going to cost the world.
That would appear to be a contradiction in terms. This is the same EU commision who thinks you can help preserve endangered fish stocks by throwing dead fish ( by catch ) back into the sea !

Here is a GUARANTEE for you....
Anyone that uses Lead Free for the EU products will STILL use lead in other markets. This will happen precisely because lead free products WILL NOT be able to compete with lead based assemblies in these areas.
Actually I think you're likely to be mistaken. Even aside from the problem and cost of making region-specific stock, you would need at minimum to run 2 soldering lines in parallel. That alone will put ppl off.
Easier for the big boys to do though.

Yes. I don't have a detailed technical arguement (sic) about how difficult it will or won't be. I'm not a metallurgist. I've just seen a lot of similar situations (with all the lame excuses and arguments in favor of lax standards) go by and this one does not look at all intractable. It's certainly less of a barrier than most of the existing compliance issues, IMHO.
Any ideas on inexpensive UL/CSA/FCC etc. switching adapters (preferably lead free) so that we can continue to ship stuff to California? ;-) I think we have more than 500 linear ones left on the shelf...

Practically speaking, sulfuric, phosphoric and carbonic are out, and hydrochloric is iffy.
I would expect to see all of the acids in small amounts, but in particular, primarily carbonic and sulfuric acids from rainwater, while the others appear as a result of ionization (acidity is acidity, in solution).
Carbonate and sulfate, common ions in the ground, would easily sequester lead before it has a chance to go anywhere. In lieu of the insoluble ions, chloride (from salinity) and nitrate (from decomposition and fertilizer runoff) could potentially be present. Chloride isn't particularly soluble, but it's more soluble than sulfate, phosphate or carbonate and could potentially move.
I wonder what the ground water lead levels are, west of here. SW Wisconsin used to be the biggest lead mining region in the U.S. (around the mid-1800s).

I don't know where 'over there' is, but in Europe I don't see many american products. Airplanes (yes!) and some cars and a few bottles of Californian wine, and that's it. The rest comes from Japan, Taiwan and China etc. If manipulation is the game, then China suffers the most from Rohs, not the US or Europe.
