Jim-out-of-touch-with-reality-Thompson strikes again. Any value his opinions on wisdom - and who might have it - might have would depend on him being wise himself, and he's a fountain of ill-informed nonsense on any area outside of pedestrian integrated circuit design.

According to him, I'm not only not wise, but also so dangerously anti- American that he felt compelled to report me to the FBI. The security clearance that got me into US Army ECOM at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey in 1970 has probably lapsed, though it was reactivated when I worked at EMI Central Research from 1976 to 1979, but the FBI probably still has access to it, so Jim has probably got a nut-case file with the FBI these days.

Your real failing is that you don't do anything, which makes you boring.

I'm not doing as much as I should, but that scarcely makes me boring. Your problem is that you seek a constant stream of approval, and get fractious when you don't get it. "Boring" is an odd way of characterising behaviour that doesn't offer you the flattery you crave, but it does capture the sensation you must experience when you monitor a data stream and it doesn't include what you seek.

Of course the rest of us might find a constant stream of "John Larkin is fantastic!" messages a little tedious, but there's no accounting for taste.

I din't want approval, I want people to play with, riff on, bat around circuit ideas. THAT is interesting. We just did it here, a minute ago, as regards crosstalk on the PCB layout of a VXI crate controller. Whoever invented the whiteboard should get a Nobel Prize. Take back Obama's, maybe.

We don't need a life biography of you, we already have you figured out.

You have figured out your answer. Pity you got it wrong, but you don't exactly make a habit of getting things right.

Not that I've noticed. I certainly envy the business John tells us he's got, but that's not exactly a certified-accountants-eye view of how well it's doing.

Privately-held companies don't usually publish financials.

We're doing fine. I don't believe in borrowing money, so we never have. We pray for high interest rates.

There seems to be, over the years, an increasing demand for companies that can do real electronics, especially precision analog or high speed instrumentation. Part of that is the shift in engineering demographics (more kiddies working higher up the abstraction stack) and part the fact that big aerospace and national-lab-type outfits are less inclined to do their own designs nowadays.

There is a fear factor here, too. Lots of people are afraid of extreme exponents (nanovolts, picoamps, picoseconds) and certain technologies (like fiberoptics) so are happy to outsource stuff like that.

No, I don't mind that, as long as the issue is electronics. Brainstorming electronics is enormous fun, and there's usually tons of disagreement. I don't always win, nor do I want to. Often (usually?) I do it with people who are smarter than I am. When brainstorming is done right, everybody wins, and it's hard to tell exactly how an idea evolved. Not everybody can play that game; egos poison brainstorming more than lack of technical talent.

No. I want to play the design game. Because it's not boring. It's about beautiful ideas and beautiful circuits, not about egos and winning and losing.

Then you must get pretty bored with your own output.

Provided that it doesn't get too technical for your under-educated taste.

And say nice things about you in the process, as opposed to pointing out that you boobed.

I don't think that the inventor of whiteboards would qualify for a Peace prize - there's always a lot of discussion around white-boards, and some of it gets acrimonious.

I mostly talk electronics, and I don't spin technical disagreements into personal insults. You, on the other hand, deal almost exclusively in dumb, content-free insults. Count your own posts, lame insults compared to technical content.

You experience correction or disagreement as personal insults, and react with personal insults. I certainly don't "deal almost exclusively in dumb content-free insults". Intelligent, content-rich insults - like this one - are definitely a component of my output, but not a major component, and I do try to keep them funny.

I haven't noticed anybody saying anything nice about you recently. I've admired your circuit design skills from time to time, but they haven't been all that visible recently.

That goes without saying, but the creative process is one of imagining and rejecting alternatives, and it demands the kind of self-confidence that can survive seeing a nice idea shot down for being less nice than was necessary.
