OT: After 56 years, it all comes back as easy as bicycle riding...

Why are liberals so gullible? At the time Mitt was immersed in a state where you _have_ to say such shit to get reelected.

I know, I lived there for four years... church-police state at its finest... I got ticketed once for working on Sunday.

Plus it wouldn't get past Congress. ...Jim Thompson

Bob, of course voting would be preferable. What I'm talking about - and what many people worry about - is a government that no longer follows the rules, that (for example) either takes control of the voting or simply declares it irrelevant for "security" reasons - whatever. There was some talk about changing some rules about elections, during the Bush regime - for security reasons. That never got too far, of course.

And yes, of course if you face off against the government, you'll almost certainly lose. But if you don't (assuming it's gone berserk), it won't be *almost* certainly. You'll lose without even putting up a fight.

But there are millions of people out there with weapons. No government is going to be able to get them all, and that's probably at least one factor helping to keep the government in check.

I think, also, that there is more to life than living longer. Quality of life must count for something. Personally I would rather go down fighting against a dictatorial government, than meekly submit to it and hope they leave me alone. I admit I might change my tune if there's a gun in my face, but I can say these bold words now...

And BTW, the fact that I can freely criticize the government is what gives me hope that it will hang in there for a while yet. But I am not a political pundit, so my hopes may be unfounded.

It's not "just" eleven. It's *way* up this year, and it's not even Summer yet. That's not the right direction at all, considering Chicago is already the murder capitol of the country - twice the rate of NYC. ISTR that Chicago has already beaten last years murder mark.

Perhaps he meant no "major media"; CBS, NBC, CBS, CNN,... Some newspapers carried it, and it was picked up on the clipping sites.

Don't forget natural disasters, riots, etc. You CAN use an AR-15 for hunting small game if you need to feed your family. Or to keep away theives or rioters.Much better "reach" than a shotgun, although a shotgun is also very good for feeding the family.

For sniping/bigger game, you want a scoped rifle in .308,.300 WinMag,.300 Win Short Mag (WSM),or .338 Lapua Mag. Also necessary for a 2nd Amendment "Reset". B-)

I understand many of the sporting goods stores now have ranges that have simulator systems to give the feel of actual combat, but use "laser tag" guns so you don't use live ammo. I hear they're VERY good. As to cost,I don't know.

proficiency to stay alive, like law enforcement, are always training on pop-up quick reaction courses. There are motor memory motions that can only be trained, and maintained, through constant repetition. Then there are a host of other factors like fatigue, low light, multiple targets, increased heart rate either due to fear factor induced adrenalin or fatigue, major distractions, less than ideal posture/shooting positions, target shooting at you, pain due to injury, dealing with surprise, and who knows what else...it's gonna be real rare that you will be able to deal with a situation on your terms.

Why do cops use more ammo to shoot their targets and shoot more innocent bystanders than civilians?

Who are you calling a liberal? Denninger? Better do some homework before making a ridiculous statement. Me, an AR-15 owner with sense enough to realize that joking about off-ing liberals does nothing to help the cause of responsible gun owners holding on to their rights?

More importantly, it appears you might be confused. It appears to be the truth that Romney did in fact ban "assault weapons" in MA. This is what Denninger is criticizing.

Do you want to argue about this fact? Or do you want to rationalize that Romney "stands for freedom" or some other gullible Republican nonsense, when in fact, just like any liberal or conservative statist, he stands for more government.

And that is exactly what we will get. No matter who we elect. Unless we swing hard-core libertarian. But the welfare Republicans and liberals will never choose personal responsibility again.

The only hope might be the youth, who after being saddled with student loan debt by central planners of the R or D type, a number of them are finally waking up:

I agree, thank goodness, because Romney would ban guns if it profited him politically, and would not if it wouldn't.

He is a completely polymer man. Not much different than the rest of the political class, though.

All successful revolts have had serious support from within the existing power structure (normally including segments of the military). Said supporters often become the new masters, with little real change.

Okay, they called it a Petition, not Letters. Goog actually *corrected* that, though - creepy.

As for the general thing about Mercantilism...

I really can't remember who it was that said it drains the ( always Royal) treasury. Sorry. It's a thing based on Adam Smith. But the main thing that angered the British, especially the King, was that America was a financial sinkhole. Similar things happened with the Hudson's Bay Company.

The State was on the hook for a lot of expense that wasn't forseen, and wasn't covered in the contract with the foreign trade entity.

I am not 100% sure how that worked out in India, but I seem to remember it was also quite expensive.

I think I got that idea from Schama's "History of Britain". ( the film series is actually better than the book).

At the time of the Irish Famine ( in the Lonely West) , oats were still being exported from Ireland. It really wasn't possible to redirect those to feed people; there would have been a financial panic. And yes, Ireland was part of an Empire.

Empires are bad for business.

Specifically the ones that were bought by Caribbean planters.

As is usual with Michener, it's a better survey of the history than most history, for non-specialists.

It's worth surveying Peter Drucker for background, but:

Try to ignore the word "predatory" - it's just a term of art. but this really happened.

GM and rents are touched on a bit here, but it's not something easy to find:

(see especially bullets 3 & 4 ) GM produced about $18billion in stuff in WWII for the government - a monster amount for the time.

This is a variation on, IMO, the Mercantilist thing. Once a corporation adapts to government work, it's probably not going to be able to do general industrial trade any more.

You'd think we'd know by now...

That _was_ the very first target, which I claimed before my son, step-grandson and daughter-in-law could obliterate my success.

(I wasn't totally surprised, though I expected the first shots to miss completely. In my youth I was quite a good shot.)

I did very good with the AR-15 as well, at 200yd targets... who couldn't with it on a bench tripod and a great scope/laser dot?

That is a very fine instrument, I'll be buying one.

I haven't decided on the handgun yet. I don't see a need for such firepower as in the Glock or BG-380. Close-up, in self-protection mode, something like a Kel-Tec that fits in the palm of your hand should suffice. ...Jim Thompson
