IMO,ADHD is from watching too much TV (at an early age)and playing video games;it trains kids brains to expect rapid changes in their environment as a normal thing, and when that doesn't happen in real life, they get agitated.
That and the high sugar levels in today's diets.

Or that low-rent neighborhoods grow around heavy industries that would employ the residents.
Kinda like airports, that are always built out in the boonies, then the homes all develop out around the airports. Then the residents begin complaining about the airport's noise, want the airport shut down.

It might surprise you that I agree. Such activities cause structural changes in the brain, at a time when it's adapting itself to its environment.
Kids become adapted to action-packed hyper-stimulating environments but, guess what--being able to sit still and think is much more useful in real life. So kids become mal-adapted.
If nothing else, excessive gaming displaces books, conversation, exploring their environment--and all sorts of important learning experiences--with carpal tunnel syndrome. Bad trade.
Despite the hype, I've researched and found no correlation there. It's bad for clogging young arteries & thrashes their pancreas(es?), setting them up for diabetes, but no reliable effect on behavior, either in my observations, or in the literature.
This is all info based on straight sugar content, mind you. Surprisingly, table sugar is not especially glycemic--it's lower than many other foods--so sugar content may not be the best way of gauging the effects of blood sugar rushes.

I disagree. To me, computer games are a martial art of the mind. It takes skill and discipline to play a game, a good game anyway. This covers a broad spectrum of games, remember: from shotguns to sudoku and more. And that's just single player games -- people often look upon gamers staring into That Box and think "how lonely", without realizing the breadth of social interaction going on within. And, don't forget all of us on this newsgroup are part of such an activity!
Now, it would be nice if games could incorporate significant physical activity as well. DDR is one example; Guitar Hero may be another (I've not played it..). Ultimately, the best solution may be IRL, but that has physical risks as well.

For society does not control crime, ever, by forcing the law-abiding to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of criminals. Society controls crime by forcing the criminals to accommodate themselves to the expected behavior of the law-abiding."

There's no question that brains physically adapt to usage. There's the London cabbie experiment, for example (hippocampus modified by required memoriztion of London' s streets). Then there's amblyopia: if a kid ignores an eye and doesn't fix that before age 10, they can lose the vision in that eye. The eye still works, but the eye-brain wiring is left undone.
So, brains adapt to use.
Nothing wrong with a game here and there--those are added experiences that grow a brain. New experiences are good.
But, I know a bunch of kids who do only that...8-10-12-14 hours a day. No books. Ever. No exercise. I'm not kidding. No bike- riding, or visiting friends. For these, video games replace social interaction, inquiry, curiosity and learning.
No, no! We're trading wisdom hard-won, the pearls gleaned from lifetimes of real-life experiences, electronic and otherwise. The guys here interact in unpredictable ways, raise new points and perspectives, bring / discover / report / create new information. We all get the advantage of our collective intelligence, experience, and observations.
That's super-creative. Games are no match; at best you're discovering someone else's script.
Those are fine, but playing a real guitar is a WAY richer, more creative, subtler experience / interaction than strumming some plastic computer peripheral-for-dummies, banging along to someone else's beat. The guitar's sound is nuanced, the timbre unique to the instrument & player, controlling it takes skill and practice.
So, I'm not at all saying that all games automatically rot the mind. They need not. I've tried a few (and seen WAY too many being played.) But they're no substitute for real life, and must not displace it. That *does* rot the mind.
Cheers, James Arthur

WHAT "social interaction"? Games are FANTASY worlds.
We're talking about YOUNG kids,pre-school. When their brain is stil forming initial connections and responses to stimuli. a BAD time to use a TV as a babysitter.

Huhh.. this is like a game review.. :P
I used to play Quake II multiplayer online and on LAN. You get out of the game what you put in. Playing smart with other smart players can be a tense challenge. One can practice military strategies such as gorilla tactics, using terrain to an advantage, defensive retreating, offensive tactics (surprise attacks), escape routes, watching your back and knowing how your enemy behaves. It gets more complicated with teams. "You..take out the sniper" "You..watch my back" "I'll bait the sniper" "You two watch the entrance" However, some kids just run around like morons and shoot anything that moves.
My favorite is the Half Life 2 series. Combat set in beautiful graphics. It's modern art. Each scene makes the player think "How do I survive this?" There are many ways to die and many ways to kill the enemy. One has to make quick choices and apply different attack and defense strategies. There's physics puzzles too. At times, it took too much thought and seemed like work!
I don't know if gaming helps with electronics design but I sure feel ready to fight some dumbass war. :P

With all respect grandpa, I must say this, age has nothing to do with intelligence. You still have 30 more years to catch up with me, honestly.
