OTOH, it's possible to go too far with airport security testing:

The relatively low effectiveness has been documented, e.g.:

This is in spite of the TSA taking action against anyone reporting the results of effectiveness tests:

Also, there are cases of testing being rigged:

This is just what I can immediately find via Google. I've seen many similar reports, but I don't make a habit of archiving every news story I read for the sake of future usenet discussions.

Beyond that, I wouldn't expect manual examination of X-ray (and similar) images to be particularly effective. Monotonous tasks have a habit of making the person performing them somewhat less than alert.

What would you do if you came home and found a pound of Semtec in your suitcase? Some people would not tell anyone, and keep it 'just in case'.

IMO,if Congresscritters and other federal employees were all required to fly commercial air,no charters, corporate "freebies",or military standby;that the air security would change for the better. I'd really like to see THEM in line, emptying their pockets, and going thru pat-downs.

We could pull that off, state-by-state referendum process... require your representatives to fly coach... let them find out what a hell it is to have to fly on business ;-) *

  • I've extended my "no-fly range" to Santa Barbara, LA basin cities, San Diego, Vegas and, under favorable weather, as far east as Dallas, Austin, San Antonio... and summers to Colorado Springs ;-)

It's just easier to drive... no packing, carry anything you want... ...Jim Thompson

Both sides of my family are well represented by different European countries. I know of English, German, Italian, and possibly French. I was told there was at least one native American tribe back about four generations, too.

They were all hard workers, till they died. Many quite early from farm of industrial accidents, or diseases that couldn't be treated at that time.

I looked at researching my family tree, but just can't afford the fees. :(

BTW, I heard that a Greek Orthodox Church is about to open near here. I used to rent a sound system to one where I lived. Great people, and food to die for at their Greek Festivals! I would love to visit one again, but now that I'm Diabetic, I don't dare. :(
