Panasonic PT-51HX41E TV powers up for 5 seconds, shuts off

My 4 year old Panasonic PT-51HX41E TV worked perfectly until this morning. Turned the power on, picture came on after 3-4 seconds (normal), heard one second of audio - click, powered off. Pushed the power button, nothing. Tried using the front panel power button instead of the remote (gasp!), nothing. Checked the UPS, seemed fine, cable converter and DVD player power up normally. Unplugged the TV, hit the power button....worked for 5 seconds, then off again. Hit the power button...nothing. Moved the plug from the UPS to the power strip, hit the power button....worked for 5 seconds, then off again. Hit the power button...nothing. Same results plugging into a receptacle on a different circuit. Removed all devices from the circuit except for the TV, same results. The trend - whenever I physically unplug the set, it will power up for 5 seconds, then nothing. I live in Florida, so have always used a UPS with power conditioning for my electronics.

It's Christmas Eve, it's Saturday, the NFL has moved up the schedule so most of the games are today, the nearest service center is 60 miles away, TV won't fit in my car, no way I'll get a service guy out here today, probably not until Tuesday at best, my wife is glaring at me.

HELP! Any thoughts, suggestions, offers to come over and fix it would be appreciated.

thanks,

Steve

You may have a safety circuit shutting down the set. The only way to get it to reset is to unplug, then plug back in. The set will need repair. Take Kip's advice, or settle watching a different set until a you have it repaired by a qualified tech. Good luck.

She's not glaring at you because of the TV, it's because your whining that you can't watch 10 hours of NFL on Christmas Eve in all it's big screen glory. (Either that or it's that stupid Santa hat and elf slippers you're wearing).

But it actually wouldn't matter what day this happened, there are too many things that will cause late model Panasonics to shut down in protect mode, and none of them are easy fixes. I've seen bad deflection yokes, flyback transformers, shorted and open coupling caps in the yoke circuit, loss of vertical deflection, etc. Even shorted CRT drive ICs will cause this. You need someone who knows how to methodically troubleshoot this TV properly. The good news is that the inside of this model slides out of the cabinet for easier transport to the repair facility (likely). Good luck and Merry Christmas.

John

BTW, you can watch 24 hours of A Christmas Story on TBS starting at

8pm......

Yeah... "Zenith is better, because it's handcrafted."

The quality goes in before the name goes on.
