What is the point of a post like that when no one has any idea what you are commenting on?

It depends what you want to know and why. On the whole I believer the commercial compilers are technically about a decade ahead of the open source/ free ones.
I am sorry, if my question was not clear enough. Basically we are a team doing a case study on embedded system industry. As part of that I am looking at the state of research on commercial compilers/other tools specifically targeted at embedded systems. So examples of inustries doing dedicated R&D for tools in embedded system would be a great starting point for me Only example of a research lab ( in the scale of a non embedded company like intel/IBM in terms of it being an independent entity) I have found is from ARM. I will now look at the list given below.Any other suggestions would be great.

Would you mind commenting further on that. I've been using gcc on a Hitachi processor and have been quite pleased with it, but maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

Based on my experiences, you're missing out on costs and bugs.
