Why so much spam in this group?

Why is there so much spam in this group? Can't Google do something about it?

This is a USENET newsgroup; Google is just pretending that it's a Google group.

There is a l Google takes abuse of its services very seriously. We're committed to dealing with such abuse according to the laws in your country of residence. When you submit a report, we'll investigate it and take the appropriate action. We'll get back to you only if we require additional details or have more information to share.

Group name: sci.electronics.basics

So, they have the details, the next step is action.

Even if the do close a spammers account, they don't stop them from reusing the same name with the same registration, or using a new log-in with a different name.

What they HAVE done is list sci.electronics.basics and sci.electronics.design as very active newsgroups, which is a big waving flag to those who think they can sell their crap if it gets plastered all over usenet on groups that are widely read.

I had to log on and navigate to a specific post before I could report abuse. The link that allowed me to enter info about the abuse was:

Maybe if enough people click on that and flood their abuse center then some action might be taken. That action might be to just shut down their abuse center.

Even their usenet group

is full of crap. They really don't care.

Good luck,

Here's a direct link you can click on and send:

You just enter the group name, message ID, and some information.

Somebody should be able to make an anti-spam-bot that reads the posts, determines that they are spam, and automagically fill in and send this form for every bit of abuse that has been posted. Maybe that will get their attention.

First, this isn't google.

It is a Usenet newsgroup, and they have been around since 1979. Google merely added dejanews' newsgroup archive within the past 7 years or so.

Google is often the problem, allowing people to post without any consideration and without any punishment.

Google is also the problem in another way, since if you read this newsgroup via google, you may see a lot more spam that real newsservers will filter out.

A guess at answering the original question is that this newsgroup is quite active, and spambots detect this when they search for new message subject lines to hijack.

I'm also ticked off at people who think the Web is all that there is to the Internet. My first connection was through a 2400bps modem, so I spent a *lot* more time reading Usenet than I did waiting for graphics- stuffed Web pages to load. That was bad enough, but I was still on AOHell, back when they required you to use their crappy pre-Netscape browser.

I finally found a way to deal with the crap. It's all google, so I used Nfilter. It's explained here:

formatting link

... but basically it pre-screens your headers and sends what survives to your newsreader, since most readers can't filter on the more important header entries.

The only time I see this spam is when someone responds to it; then I see the response, plus whatever portion of the original they kept in the message.

I have Nfilter maintain a log of the headers it drops; it's almost 100% googlegroups, and it's a huge log after a few days. Hundreds, if not thousands, of entries.

In my experience, reporting abuse originating from Google has had about the same effect as throwing marshmellows at a turtle. I' can't believe they are unaware of google's reputation as spammer friendly and yet they do nothing.

What makes you think there's anyone there now? It's hard to find evidence of intelligent life at the end of the abuse report right now. I wonder what the effect would be if they did shut down. it's possible I'm wrong and they hava a large team ther working really hard right now and without then the whole usenet would simply collapse with the increased volume they now manage. OR the one guy on staff in abuse could be out playing volleyball. I know where my money is.
