GROUP MODERATION

Hi folks,

the spam in this group is growing fast.

Are there any ways to moderate the group?

No. Ignore the spam, post relevent content, and the group quality will go up.

Please read previous posts on the spam. It basically depends on your ISP if you see it or not. I'm currently using Eternal September as a free NNTP service, and they seem to can most of the spam.

IMHO it's not as simple as that. Rather, if Google (from whom much of the spam seems to originate) do nothing the spam will increase. As spammers detect that a newsgroup is tolerant of spam 'word gets around' and that newsgroup becomes more of a target.

Some newsgroups are free of spam while others are becoming saturated with it. What makes the difference? I wonder if different people at Google are responsible for different newsgroups. For example, one group I have used for a long time has been well looked after. Spams which appear there are reported and are soon deleted. Hopefully the originating userids are deleted too.

What to do?

I know of another group which was until recently saturated with spam. Recent spams there have also been deleted following reports.

For those using Google as a front end, reporting the spam to Google does seem to make a difference.

Ignore it and it won't go away.

I monitor rec.crafts.jewelry and it has been moderated for a long time. I think there is a method by which a vote is simply taken in the newsgroup and the designated moderator begins receiving posts to approve and repost.

you could contact Peter Rowe at rec.crafts.jewelry for info. I guess.

Anybody is of course free to create any kind of moderated groups. But leave this one alone, OK? It has been around for many years, has been through various spam waves and is still quite healthy.
