I read and enjoy reading this group on Google Groups, but the amount of junk posted here makes sorting through it tedious. Do I need to use a mail reader such as Thunderbird to filter this stuff out, or is there a way to do it on Google Groups? Thanks for the advice!
To do really deep filtering, such as looking into the body text and all of the header lines, not just the overview headers (typically From, Subject, Newsgroups, Message-ID, Date) you need to set up a local news server that acts as an intermediate between the server "out there" and your client. This can be, and often is, on your own machine; a separate box to act as a server is not necessary.

I use Hamster Playground, mostly because I tried it first, got it working, and am happy with the results. Quite a few around here use nfilter/NewsProxy instead (probably for similar reasons ;-)
You will find a lot of people are ignoring posts from @gmail these days because they are a very badly behaved spam injection route.
Thunderbird is a pretty good newsreader for Usenet and allows relatively easy configuration of global anti-spammer filters based on sender and subject keywords. I deduce from the apparently large number of headers being ignored that some of the sci.* hierarchy is under attack again.
Since much of the noise and junk comes from Google mail, and because Google just doesn't give a @#$% about being a good citizen and shutting down the spammers (which you're supposed to do), be sure to send Google a nice mail telling them why you're not using Google groups any more. Be sure to CC it to some of the advertisers that appear on their pages, 'cause that's where their money comes from.
Maybe if enough folks do that they'll clean up their act.

You forgot 126.com etc--they're all over some of the other groups.
Cheers

Apparently not in any of the groups I follow, but I'll keep an eye out.

Jim Thompson posted to this thread but didn't list much detail about the multiple layers he uses. Webb mentioned NewsProxy (which JT uses--but didn't mention). JT also went into detail previously:

Jim, Phil Allison? How can you? That's one of the best comedy/dramas around. Phil is unpredictable, never can tell where he's at in his medicinal dosage. Sometimes I have a little nostalgic pang for his long name calling tirades. Mike :-) PS. He's been quite friendly lately.
Maybe some of my other filter types take care of that. I can't recall any problems with 126.com
I also have a whitelist _ahead_ of my filter. There are some good guys that must use google, etc., like Win Hill.

I have a _special_ filter for NymNoNuts. Trivial and very selective and effective ;-)
