spam in group

May 04, 2009 29 Replies

As a regular reader of the electronics postings I am heartily sick of all the advertising for clothing, shoes and vanity items. I recall in the old days these would be deleted by a moderator. I can only assume Google's advertising policies are a bit out of control. We have a situation where the majority of the group is polluted by this garbage. I would hope something is done.

motzarella's news server filters all this nonsense out , so I don?t really know what your talking about.

Cheers

More penis enlargement spam! I want my penis to slither like a snake down the hall to the washroom without getting out of my computer chair.

When you utilize your filters correctly, THEN something will have been done.

The alcohol infusion-to dead brain cell count-to new brain cell birth rate is waning on you. You are starting to look as dumb as some of the senile old farts do.

This is an unmoderated USENET newsgroup. Since you use Google, perhaps you could learn what USENET is, and the difference between a moderated and an unmoderated group.

How's the jello?

I have Agent set up with a lot of filters, for sex/clothing/money schemes, things like that. Maybe 5 per cent of the posts that I see are spam. I do see Agent announcing that it will fetch, say, 200 headers, and then just see a few new posts. It must filter most of them.

I don't use filters, and I have seen the levels of spam rise to intolerable levels and then fall to a mere annoyance, followed by another surge. Unfortunately, SED is one of the groups listed by google as having high activity, so it is a prime target for those who have paid another spammer for the secret to get rich quick while doing almost zilch. For some time I sent complaints in to google, and I thought it cleaned up the crap for a while, but there are always fresh loonies in search of fresh meat. They should realize that this NG is populated by people of high intelligence (except for DimBlub and a few other notables), and even they are bright enough not to fall for the crap being offered. The greedy, lazy spamaloonies should search for groups that attract those with weak minds and strong portfolios.

Kill anything originating from Google -> 90% of the crap is gone!

Not a chance. Google lets spammers sign up for as many free accounts as they want, so if you get one nuked, they come straight back under another name. This is why many people filter out all Google Groups posts. I've tried campaigning to have Google treated the way other spammer-friendly NSPs are treated, but Google spends too much money for any of their news-peers to drop them.

Supernews was dropping anything posted to five or more newsgroups from google groups. Then Giganews bought them and dropped all the filtering they did.

You can\'t have a sense of humor, if you have no sense!

A friend of mine is the ex-Supernews news-admin. He's the reason that I know about Googles peering arrangements.

Does googlegroups even have filters?

Thanks, Rich

They are readily available:

DoS-ing Google is probably an impossibility. Even generating enough extra traffic to make a visible blip on their traffic graph would be hard enough.

Perhaps a big enough botnet (since you're already doing something illegal) would get their attention.

But perhaps one could make a physical protest at Google headquarters carrying signs that say "Google's Usenet Interface SUCKS!"

Reminds me of Deja News, and when it went out of business ... many months later, Google both Deja's archives, and finally put them online (was it over a year the archives were inaccessible? It was a dark period for Usenetians, regardless), and people were happy it was back, though I'm not sure Google's interace ever worked as well as Deja's did. Then newsgroup acces got (intentionally!) conflagrated with Google's own discussion crap "Google Groups" and everything went all to hell.

Interesting and weird. Your perspective is not the same as mine.

Usenet (our text forum)IS what "Google Groups" is (claims to be). Usenet has been around even long before your precious deja. as have the groups. Are Google Groups users creating new dot alt groups? I doubt it.

There is no "goggle discussion crap". There are WebTard idiots that "found out" about "google groups", and next to none of them have any clue that it is Usenet, or that they are invaders therein, with their zero grasp of conventions that have been in place for decades in the groups. So we get stupid posters posting in stupid ways.

It's like Elementary School kids... EVERY DAY!

Goddamned whole world is filling up with punk ass gang boy retards that do not know a goddamned thing about a goddamned thing.

No. Not only is it rude (and possibly illegal), but you'd also f*ck up the search engine, which is still pretty good.

Why not learn to figure out which messages are spam, and just ignore them?

Good Luck! Rich

That's because Da Gubmint _pays_ unmarried girls to make bastards.

Hope This Helps! Rich
