SPAM is killing this newsgroup!

Is there a way to protect this group? I wonder why some groups haven't been affected by spam yet while others are under attack..

Maybe spammers don't know what "FPGA" means yet. ...or the activity levels of those groups aren't denoted as *High* by Google Groups.

Useful data.

The improve-usenet.org site is written by a guy who would cut off his nose to spite his face. He describes blunt tools and doesn't detail how to whitelist useful Google Groupers.

And I'm working on filter schemes to eliminate the master-baiters from visibility ;-)

However, ultimately it can lead to the demise of newsgroups. Not all people can install filters, for example not on corporate PCs. Others are just occasional visitors and for yet others a proxy is too complicated. Eventually we won't have critical mass anymore.

We should all write to Google and other companies where this spam originates. I did. But unless lots of us do that nothing is going to happen, they probably just won't care what this does to their own reputation.

Google doesn't care, nor have a reputation to fret over. As long as they rake in the dough, they're happy. What we need to come up with is a way to totally filter Googlegroups so it doesn't function at all.

Filters won't result in the demise of the newsgroups. It'll convince Googlegroups users to move somewhere else so their posts are seen.

I'm not bothered in the slightest by Googlegroups...

I maintain a whitelist that I update based on civil/intelligent replies.

Joerg, Something keeping you from using nfilter ?:-)

Nah, just lack of time. Could have tried it yesterday but a water line leak conveniently manifested itself Friday night. Fixed it, thought "ah, attaboy, done!", when my wife came running outside and said that when I turned the water back on a puddle started to form in the kitchen. Well, this pretty much shot the whole afternoon but at least I got that one fixed until the time the barbeque had to be fired up (ribs, marinated chicken, bratwurst and potatoes).

This afternoon a pole has to be removed where the previous owner must have dug the hole so the other end comes out in China. He was a pilot and veteran so everything had to be WW-III proof. Then the dogs want their three miles ...

But I guess nfilter needs to be installed here if Google lacks the ethics to stop this spam. Michael's idea to boycott their search engine is good. Which other one would work well for EE stuff? The closest in the olden days was Altavista but it often didn't find stuff that Google did.

Ok, question. For XP machines would the nfilter release "1.2.1-b1" be the correct version?

Using the "killfile by Message-ID of killfiled posts in the References line" technique? I have found it to be quite effective.

Yep ;-)

I'm nowhere up-to-speed with "regular expressions" yet.

But I'll get there ;-)

Regardless if google does this delibretly or not they are disbehaving. There's been a punishment in the past that served to correct these kind of behaviours from various service providers. Namely UDP, Usenet Death Penalty.

In essence other usenet servers will simple refuse to peer with the offending server(s). Additional pain can be added with cancel bots against that provider.

I suggest this action to be taken if a *massive* flow of spam isn't terminated. That might bring their attention.

In other news cogent sucks.
