Who sells RF shield cans?

Where can one buy those tin-plated RF shields with snap-on lids? The stuff modern TV tuners are using but for circuit board mounting (meaning open frame with solder pins). One to two square inches, no more than

1/2" high (because it must go onto VME boards). If it doesn't have a lid but is permanently closed after soldering that would be sort of ok as well.

Things is, we don't need a million per month so the usual metal shop order is out. Of course I know we could also buy and eat pounds of Altoids to get those cans but I guess that might result in stomach aches.

Joerg,

These parts are custom in all applications where we have used them. Never seen a COTS part of this sort. Have you considered buying and recycling some canned module; RF modulator, tuner, etc?

As a data point, Jameco part 141639 is $1.74 in 10pc, which is rather expensive - I expect you can find it for

That's what I was afraid to be the case. Maybe we'll just do a series at the local machine shop and then offer it to Digikey :-)

Thanks, Lewin. It's a bit high for VME, might scrape the neighboring board. Butchering these is almost as much work as rolling my own though. I've done it for the prototype. Nice shiny copper, looks really posh. But we can't do that in the final version, copper thiefs and all that ;-)

Excellent! That's exactamente what I was looking for. Many thanks. In case someone else has a similar need this is the direct link:

Don't know Laird. But when I look at the rapid pace at which major corporate web sites slide down the hill I have the impression that the script kiddies have made it into the corporate cubicles :-(

Maybe it's time that Scott Adams introduces Dotnetbert and Flashbert.

has some. I don't know if they are on the website. I pick these things up from time to time at surplus shops since they are relatively cheap (i.e. a quarter) and once in a while come in handy.

Come to think of it, the ones Halted has are meant for soldering to the PCB.

Joerg: fotofabrication also sells some that are available in flat sheets with score marks for varying heights. You can break off sections for prototypes, but I think they are all 5 sided - no removable lids, and no through-hole solder tabs

If you want custom made (but small orders are not too pricey) take a look at:

Thanks, Steve. Seems like you can get them in a size to cover the whole circuit board. Very nice.

Couldn't see any on their web site. We have a Halted here in Sacramento but it's pretty small and I always dread the long drive into town. But it certainly is an option if the others turns us down because of MOQ. First we just have to built some prototypes, a dozen or so.

And an article on shielding, just because it was in the same file.

Let's see ... 12 shields at 25 cents a pop. That $3, oh, but $20 for the gas.

I do like to support Halted just to keep them in business. These surplus stores are becoming extinct thanks to the net and ebay. No more Haltek, RA, Just-In-Time, and maybe one or two more I can't recall.

Ace is still in business (according to the website)

Oh, please forgive me, master Prong. I humbly implore your indulgence for giving assistance in such an unworthy manner. Perhaps if I had access to the mystical Book of Prong, I would understand my weaknesses and be able to participate correctly in enlightened technical interchange with those so much more knowledgeable than myself.

That also looks like a great place to buy this stuff. They do seem to have removable-lid versions:

Thanks, those are the companies Jeff and Steve mentioned. Looks like they both carry what we need.

Hmm, Kista in Sweden. Must be a high-tech hub because our fast pulse generator was designed and built there. That article could help folks starting in EMC.

It's not the money. It's when they can't tell you whether they have something, you hop in the car, get hardcore stuck in traffic and three hours later you are back with empty hands. Happened before and then those three hours need to be caught up.

Agree. But I believe this requires a huge shift in how parents educate their kids and not dump that responsibility on schools alone. If all they want is the next release of Super-King-Kong for the Playstation those stores are doomed anyhow.

Sometimes I envy you guys in the Bay Area. Then again, after each trip there where I always seem to get stuck in traffic I am cured of that envy for a few weeks.
