I typed in my data, and it says having a black roof saves me $107 a year in heating costs over having ... a black roof! So, in the immortal words of Bill Murray (Caddyshack), I've got that going for me.

Yep. This one calculates we have 3,662 degree F * heating days and 1,366 degree F * days worth of cooling. That's probably right. But the winters range from mostly sunny to completely cloudy, so solar thermal heating is dicey. And I spend nearly zero on cooling. If it's hot, I just adapt to it.

I once dreamed of an ultra-efficient solar palace, until I figured out I could just back off on the thermostat and do as well.

Have you ever worked out how much effect "cloudy" has on solar heating?

Clouds scatter light, rather than absorb it. Very dense cloud does scatter enough light back out into space to create local cooling, but intermittent fluffy clouds scatter extra light onto your solar panels (on top of the dir ect sunlight) to create a bonus.

Human beings do have designed-in evaporative cooling. It's called sweating.

The Tesla public charging stations are free. A half charge takes a typical 20 minutes.

A recent newspaper article notes a congestion problem at some stations. That's probably because the free charging includes free parking.

The charging station in Truckee, behind the Safeway, is sometimes full at peak shopping times. But not by Teslas.

They're rated for use in "enclosed fixtures," but I have no idea how that

g fixture with an open bottom.

I don't like electronics running hot, so I kludged a heatsink by cutting th e bottom off the alleged "beer" can. The bottom, and the first few mm up the side are 0.014" thick, and much thinner higher up.

OMG! I'm not asking you for a picture again. (The digital type only take a few seconds.. :^)

I could see the hose clamp coming... all shop project "fix-its" should have a hose clamp, zip tie or twisted wire. (I've got a lot of 16, 18 AWG magnet wire for such things.)

Hey, after market LED heat sink add-ons might sell. I like the idea of copper, with a nice oxide patina, maybe? You'd have to "clean up" the hose clamp.
