If it was strong enough to do that, it would block most of the surface, full time. They would have to use tracking mounts to get anything useful from the panels.

I doubt that it would block even 1%. The blades would be quite thin, and one could chrome them.
Ok, wanted to double check. This is one of those 'don't rely on wiki' moments. It is the 'accepted wisdom' that DDT causes eggshell thinning, based on one study way back when. Later analysis of his methodology yielded, among other problems, was that his supposed measurements were behond the scope of his available tools. However, this is the environmental 'sciences' where it is image and impressions, not data and analysis, that rules the day. Once you have established that eggshells are thinned, or climate is being changed, then you don't really have to defend the research any more. It just 'is'!

A single silicon cell will produce about 0.6 V and in order to build a "12 V" panel, about 20 cells need to be connected in series.
In a series connected circuit, a single "rotten" cell will destroy the performance of the whole string of cells. If a tree branch is casting a shadow on a single solar cell, the performance of that string of cells is ruined.
A simple 1 % loss of illumination could reduce the electric output by
10-50 % in the worst case.

Well, better hope the no clouds cause a variation in sunlight above 1%. The cells are, of course, much larger than the blade spacings.
DO you believe dust will be the only crud on the panels? What happens when it rains?
That's not saying much. Shingles are cheap and intentionally made to be replaced. PV cells aren't, and can't even take a little fogging.

If you are going to use blades, you definitively need a tracking system in order to avoid the shadow obscuring a cell.
If you are using a tracking system, simply put the panel in the vertical position, when the sun is not shining or even lock the active surface downwards to keep it away from rain, hail or strong winds. A small solar detector can be hardened to handle all these conditions.
Then build a working prototype and file for patents.

And a very nice scope it is that you sold to me. Thanks. I am now looking to add something smaller, lighter, about 50 MHz and lower priced (a proper portable to take to demos and such).
My first scope was a kit.
I really like my 50 MHz Rigol. Digital, color, averaging, FFT, filtering, USB, all that, for around $400.

How many birds do you get in (say) Death Valley?
Good point, but I'm always buying them as well. If I didn't sell them there'd be hell to pay from the wife. Her "room" is already half filled with em!
