A cellar in FLorida? The well at my last house was 100 feet from the house. On a typical Florida summer day the water was too hot to use, even thought the pipe was three feet below the surface.

In Ohio I had the pipe for city water freeze, and it was four feet below the surface.

Well, roofing is dangerous, and the danger comes from walking around. While you're sitting and working (like a roofer, most of the time), you're generally pretty safe. It's when you move that the little gritty granules suddenly let go and send you sliding.

Cleaning will involve mostly standing and moving, which is dangerous to start with, plus it will be wet.

I'd assume--maybe wrongly--that novices would be even more prone to falling than professional roofers, wouldn't you?

I'm an experienced mountain climber. Sliding on loose sandy scree is one of the greatest perils -- nearly killed me twice that I can think of.

And, I climb on my roof regularly for maintenance stuff. Conclusion? Roofs are scary.

Oh definitely. Not a reason to avoid PV, just a maintenance hassle that comes with the package.

Okay, I am a kind of dreaming type, but I don't believe in Utopia. I am realistic and surging for a better way of life. In my eyes it is necessary.

I see also practical problems with Nuclear, especially safety and waste, but also with digging uranium. I think it's better to make life more efficient, Than we need less energy. We use to much drinking-water for other purposes as drinking, use more energy as needed for transport, often streetlights are producing more heat as they produce light and we use electricity while we could use other solutions in many cases. There are several people experimenting with wind-up machines for simple purposes.

There are also wind, watercraft, magnetmotors, waterchemistry, geothermal, fossile fuels, and maybe other new developments. Some of them are in experimental state, but they all seem to be a promissing solution for the future.

All the solutions have their pro and cons, so (in my vision) reducing is the best way. But reducing has also a problem, because it will save money. When people save money, they gonna spend it on other things. It will cost energy again. Therefore it will only be a winning combination when we use durable energy.

I see your point, but I think it's to easy. We cannot find enough places for the waste for a long period of time. There are many risks, the chance of accidents is small, but it could be catastrophic when an accident happens. More nuclear plants means more chance for accidents and more radioactive waste. That's also "common sense".

I don't agree, Solar energy is cheaper in many cases, I think it will be much cheaper in the near future.

I have more time, but less money. It doesn't lower my standard of living, I've never felt so rich before. I 've learned to see. You don't need money on a bank-account, You just need money to pay your bills. When you reduce the amount of bills, you get more time for a living. I'm lucky, I'm still healty, otherwise I didn't got the chance for walking this road. There are a lot of DIY-guides to make cheap solutions for energy. Just google and you will see.

We will see, maybe somebody will find someday a better solution, I don't know. The ones who doesn't ride the highway are the ones who will find new roads. It takes some time. ;-)

You might reduce energy consumption when you got some airflow behind the fridge. When the motor get hot, the fridge want to get hot too. The motor will be spinning and generate more heat. Blowing a little air behind the fridge will be enough to cool down the motor.

Propane is used in travel trailers, but at home you might use a cheaper solution for heat.

It would be a good idea to bring the water from Florida to ohio and visa versa. :-D

"when"? you consider it inevitable. It's not,and certainly not a "catastrophic" accident". Plus,there are newer reactor designs like the pebble-bed type that are inherently "safe",can't have a meltdown.

radioactive waste can be reprocessed,like France does,and minimizes the high level stuff that must be kept away from people. the low level stuff is no different than ordinary background radiation.

But you get a TREMENDOUS amount of energy for that small amount of waste. Reliable energy,all day,all night,every week for many YEARS before refuelling.

Meanwhile,one heat wave and you swelter because you don't have enough electric to run air conditioning. Or one real cold snap,and you don't have enough electric to heat,and can't use wood or coal for environmental reasons,then you freeze,maybe to death. IIRC,parts of Europe had both those problems in recent times. even in the US,some areas have brownouts because they allowed environmentalnuts to block needed electric projects.

but it makes for great heat pump performance in the winter,for a ground water heat pump system. also for AC in the summer.

not really,if you know anything about the Florida aquafer,or aquafers in general. Ohio is on Lake Erie,all FRESH water,LOTS of it. Easy to pump out,filter and treat. Florida is surrounded by ocean,pump too much water out of the ground,and you get saltwater intrusion and long term contamination of your water supply. The coastal areas already can't use their underground water and have to pipe it from the interior,and those interior communities don't like that(makes sinkholes,that turn into new "lakes"). We're discussing desalination plants now. Those -could- be solar powered.

Our electric companies are building TEST solar plants,BTW. thermal solar and photovoltaic plants. they are experimenting to see if they are PRACTICAL,*in commercial scale*.

In central Florida,the water table is only about a foot below ground level. very few homes have basements....even fewer have -dry- basements. 8-)

In VT, one year several water mains broke at 8'.

Hurricanes and hailstorms, I guess there will be high insurance premiums for solar roof arrays there. Florida is reasonably sunny, but any area that gets regular golfball size hail is probably the worst place to install solar.

I strongly suspect it will compile under most any compiler. It is a really nice design. So if you already have a compiler (IIRC np is written in "C"), just give it a try.
