Gotta admit that every now and then (nearly never actually), Thompson's wit and humor actually hits a fresh nerve. That was hilarious.

John's actually a damn fine engineer, and an overall great guy. Cheerful, witty, and smart, with an Irish twinkle in his eye that doesn't survive e-mail well. Heart of gold. He rubs some people the wrong way, but that's just the way the world is.

USENET makes things worse. Something about written words leads to misunderstandings you'd never have person-to-person.

Anyway, to quote that famous wife-beater, Rodney King, can't we all just get along?

We all screw up or fall short one way or another (except Phil Hobbs :-). Let's learn from each other, raise each other up, build on our collective strengths, and celebrate the best in all of us.

"If I have seen a little further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." --Sir Issac Newton

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours." --John of Salisbury (1120-1180 AD)

Actually a snide dig at Robert Hooke, who was not only very short, but also had a twisted spine. If he and Christopher Wren had been as good at math as Newton, they would have worked out the law of gravity first. Hooke is on record as proposing an inverse square law, but he didn't have the math to predict elliptical orbits.

Are you telling us that Newton plagiarised his shoulders of giants quote?

No, it wasn't an act of plagiarism, just something he said, which was a variation on a common theme, an idiom of his time, that was later quoted. Newton can't control that.

Didn't know it was there, and now that I know - and have downloaded a dictionary - it still doesn't seem to be working. Firefox claims that spell-checking is automatically enabled.

Hmm. It now does seem to be enabled - it doesn't recognise "Firefox" as a legitimate word.

Thanks.

I criticized one of John's circuits... rightfully so, it was crap... as most of his "circuit" posts have been... and I posted a simulation refuting his weaseling (Larkin provided no component values, as usual).

John doesn't take well to criticism... he's quite a lot like Slowman in that respect.

I offered a truce last week. He retorted that I was an asshole forever:
