One of our customers did us the honor of declaring us to be a critical supplier. The reward is a 30-page quality audit checklist and a multi-day on-site audit of our quality systems. Most of the stuff on the checklist we don't even understand. Heck, we usually don't even understand the syntax, much less the meaning. Like, we are supposed to have a PFMEA process procedure. So I looked it up... 1) Major problem indicator: "structured analytical tool" implies U R screwed if you subscribe to the BS. 2) Below that, is the bald-faced lie "A simple explanation".

3) The total garbage is ended with another lie: "I welcome all comments on this article".

I strongly suggest that you deep-six the whole shamuggah yesterday. Bet anyone can figure out where (and why) something went wrong in ten femtoseconds (or less) if that person has more brains than the idiot that created the cited trash.

Heh, that's funny!

Yeah, a lot of this stuff is totally crazy, just make-work for people. Of course, in safety-critical stuff like electronically controlled excavators and cranes, elevators and whatnot, it is actually necessary. Look at the big mess Boeing is in with the Li-ion batteries. Geez, this is going to cost them MANY millions. (But, I'm sure they have ALL the paperwork in order.)

Not to people. But the process is worth maybe a couple million dollars per day. So I tell them, buy lots of spares.

IIRC PFMEA is required for AS9100 (formerly known as ISO 9100): military, aerospace and stuff like that. Unless your customer is AS9100 certified himself, he's pulling your leg.

It all boils down to economics. What's the ratio between cost of compliance and annual profit (not just sales) realized from this company. Then you will know how to price product sold to this customer.

Congretulations, you have just been inflicted with Big Bizness School paperwork. How valuable it that customer? If not that much of your business, really consider telling them GFY. Your choice in the end whether or not to put up with that crap.

It may well be a case of they are trying/need to get certified and cannot get until the whole supply chain is certified. I have seen baloney like that before. If that is the case make THEM PAY FOR IT.
