We have a proto-tool (NC router type) but it's rarely used because it's cheaper to have boards done outside than dick around with the machine for a couple of hours. The quality if far better, too.
That said, I do use an X-Acto knife and yellow wires for some prototyping.

Exactly- all this offshore manufacturing is a short term profit windfall expedient and won't last forever. But there is no onus on industry to look out for the national welfare, the stockholders are the primary consideration. They'll finally get a clue when no one can afford their products no matter how cut rate, just like the federal government is getting a clue now that there's not enough economic activity and income to finance their pathetically overpriced, mismanaged, disorganized, corrupt and wasteful government. The US is just a place to do business, no more and no less, for now anyway. Pertinent to this NG, the Dept Labor has forecast a 30% decline in all semiconductor industry related employment, in the US, over the next 10 years- this is very nice....

The hesitation to hire is multi-factorial. Basically businesses got burned, badly, two years ago, and now they're gun-shy. All the draconian regulation and tax-talk aggravate that. Obamacare's the stupid elephant in the livingroom, but we also have energy costs, and an actual (not just perceived) lack of demand.
I submit that the graph in the upper-right corner of that page of the civilian employment-to-population ratio is more telling. Substantially, unemployment isn't falling so much as fewer and fewer Americans are working, which makes the responsible ones less likely to spend.
What they've learned is to let the banks hide insolvency by carrying devalued assets without recognizing those losses (mark-to-model instead of mark-to-market). Banks don't dare sell, prices stay artificially high, the market locks up. Lots of other unintended results, too. So, we've got zombie banks.
That's a longer-term problem, one I predicted >30 years ago. It's not all bad (becoming that productive), and there are spontaneous, free (as in "unforced; not coerced") solutions to at least some of the social problems that presents. Some of those are happening currently.
The immediate problem is Barack and his Democrats are deficit-spending money we don't have on a scale never seen before in history.
That hurts everyone. It destroys jobs, destroys production, and destroys the chances of the underdogs to lift themselves up. It's dishonest, irresponsible, reckless, and inhuman. Great suffering has and will yet come of it.

Sure. The people who hire grass-cutters have rapidly increasing marginal productivity, and this enables them to hire grass-cutters.
When my Grandad turned about, say, eight, he was at the cusp of being labor. For my Dad, it was about 15 to 20. For people my age, it might have been as much a thirty if you did grad school and all.
The path to being productive is much longer and narrower. And there's a larger and larger segment of the populace who just won't make it - they'll never have a marginal product above zero.

I suspect it's personality related. Some people I've known (and avoid), change personality when drunk. Me? I just fall asleep. My persona never changes... read and weep, Larkin and Slowman ;-)
