(big snip---this is so far from the OP)
I've personally known physicists that were darn good engineers themselves. John Pierce, Claude Shannon, Si Ramo come to mind.
My best English instruction occurred while learning French.

Yep. You're right. I had Berkeley Spice on a VAX780 by then, so it must have been well before 1975.

Nope. Wasn't until 1979 I had Berkeley Spice available to me.

I've often heard rumors that most women also despise engineers. Mine married me anyway. Ok, her father was an engineer ...

Because we're bad tippers?
There is a type of woman who likes engineers. They are excellent in general, and not at all rare. I'd go so far as to say that women who despise engineers are a bad, vain, troublesome, expensive lot.
"The only use that women have for engineers is to marry them."

That was a good one :-)
Not really: Mine always appreciated that I'd repair just about anything, especially when it comes to non-replaceable stuff. What impressed me about her was that she carried pliers, screwdrivers and such in her purse and actually used those during her job. Even today I sometimes come into the backyard and find her with wrenches and stuff next to her. "What's up?" ... "Oh, the irrigation croaked again over there but it's fixed now".

Maybe most, but that majority isn't worth having. The stable ones seek engineers.
My wife is like her father (a jr. high history teacher) in that regard. It should be a crime to sell her a tool. He father was downright dangerous with a screwdriver.
We had home-grown simulators in the '70s. One was batch entry via TSO on a /370, while the other interactive, written in APL. It was a great day when they agreed. ;-)
I had (~1973) a specialized machine that would do pole-zero stuff. Can't remember the name now, but it was the cat's meow for doing filters.

There were courses that used simulators in college, though I didn't take any. After graduation ('74) I quickly learned how to use the simulators at work. They were quite good at transient behavior, though the AC simulations were lacking. There was a ton of money put into models. They learned quickly that good models are far cheaper than useless silicon.
And how many of them taught lower division engineering students in the university?
Largely, not all.
My best English instruction occured while learning German, it turns out that there is a reason for that.

Bad nerd sitcom? Eeuuww. .
My best English instruction occurred while sitting on my Mom's lap, (age ~1.5 or so) with a book sitting on _my_ lap, and Mom reading from it, pointing to each word as she read it. ;-)
Cheers! Rich
Excellent nerd sitcom, thanks. :-)
And Penny the neighbor is hot!
(of course, as in all sitcoms, the characters are all caricatures.)
But I don't have much else to do on a Monday evening, poor me. ;-) I was first shocked, then pleased last night when I went to watch NCIS and saw another ep of TBBT, then 2 1/2 Men (also hilarious); NCIS was on at 9:00. :-)
Cheers! Rich
IIRC, they were LC delays, built on TTL (74LS04) chips. As you say, 10ns was a pretty standard step.
It doesn't sound familiar. What is that you're trying to figure out? Or do you just need to replace a faulty part?
