my remote for this player broke down.
can i use a universal remote player to access SET UP menu? i need to do so in order to reset the DVD Player to region free setting.

Very few universal remotes will work properly or even at all with the internal menus of TVs' and other devices. You will need to order the original factory remote if you want proper compatiblity and access to your equipment.
