Hardware Recomendation (cheap)

Hi all,

Looking for some hardware recomendations.

This will be for a small industrial device that collects data (from serial ports) and transmits to internet site. Low-cost is a must since we will potentially be deploying up to

1000 of these devices in the field to monitor our equipment.

The specs:

  • CPU - doesn't really matter speed 50Mhz is plenty (i386 preferred, not mand)
  • Memory - 32MB
  • Support for CF/DOC (Compact Flash / Disk-On-Chip)
  • Minimum 3 serial ports supported
  • at least 1 x 10Mbit Ethernet port
  • must support linux
  • 0 each (single quantity)
  • - (for 1000 qty)

Thanks all, Barry

The company I used to work for makes such a box, but it's overkill (8 serial, two Ethernet), and a lot more that $100. Just in case you're interested:

I have yet to see a decent linux SBC that meets this price.

This may be feasable as prices will drop faster than 50% between single and 1000. If you had asked a year ago, SSV, Hannover, might have been a an option. But now that the $ has plunged ...

They cost 50% more, but they are tried and true with linux support. You might check out Soekris at
