All I can suggest is that the procedure is to generally write a code out to the parallel port or the USB port, wherever it's connected.
If you don't get the right information back, then the program is illegal.
The trick is to develop the algorithm, and decide what things can be passed through to the printer...

The word "dongle" means a variety of different things. You may get more help if you explain more precisely what you're trying to do.
Also, it will help if you tell us more about what your level of experience is - when you say "school project" I can't tell if you're in third grade or if you're a post-doctoral student.
sci.electronics.design may be a more useful group, for a design project.
