Not exactly right. There was a US bounty program on exploration, so a lot of claims were staked, and the 'known reserves' for that reason are good for centuries. No one looks for more when it's uneconomic to pay to file a claim and wait for the market to support the price of extraction.

Economics means the 'known reserves' of any mineral are good for a decade or three, rarely more. The planet is large, our mining is just surface scratches.

It would do w. onders for Canada. By land area most of the country is only suitable for farming caribou. I don't buy into a lot of Jared Diamond's ideas but his 'Collapse' was interesting.
