When I was younger I used to ride Amtrak all around the East Coast, it was significantly faster than driving, an order of magnitude more pleasant than the bus, and a lot cheaper than flying if you always went economy coach. I even took the train as far west as Salt Lake City, about a three day ride from New York, where around Helper, UT someone drove around the gates in a pickup and was struck by the locomotive. On board we didn't feel a thing, of course, but amazingly the driver somehow survived. After a 6 hour delay we were on our way again. Amtrak never had a reputation for on time performance, but I think that was the longest delay I ever personally experienced!

Though as I've gotten older my views have shifted rightwards somewhat, I was glad that Amtrak was available then and would be sad to see it go. I think it should continue operating as the public service that it is, and that access to basic non-motor vehicle transportation is as important as having a taxpayer funded postal service or fire department. Ridership has been consistently trending upwards for the past half decade, and with fuel prices going the way they are I think that trend is going to continue.

But if you want to see government subsidized transportation done the way it really should be done, you'll have to go to France or Japan.

We know which way James Arthur is going to vote, and it does remind me of Churchill's comment about democracy - "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." (from a House of Commons speech on Nov. 11, 1947). We ought to disenfranchised people like James Arthur, who have demonstrated that they can't think straight, but nobody has ever worked out a scheme that could be guaranteed to only disenfranchise nitwits.

Surely there aren't enough US manufacturers of ineffective hi-tech defence systems to keep their favourite party in power? Of course, if they kick back enough contributions to the electoral expenditures of their favourite legislators, TV advertising does seem to be able to fool enough of the people enough of the time.

Over-priced health insurance schemes seem to have mastered the same trick.

Partly true, of course, but by the plain numbers the problem is social spending, by far. Right now, social spending is about 2/3rds of the budget, and completely consumes the federal revenue *by itself*.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and interest on the debt by themselves dissipate the entire national revenue. That's with no money for roads, defense, or anything else.

I'd make some defense of our "interference," as that policy has freed hundreds of millions from bondage. America has been a wellspring of freedom, an inspiration and a model. It's a tricky thing though--we definitely want to be a beacon, not a busybody.

Well, theoretically, Social Security is the citizen's own money, albeit I agree with you on the rest. I just recently applied for early SS bennies (I turned 62 last Mar. 3), and was getting kinda worried after a while, after not hearing anything back, so I called. I talked to a real live person, with some trepidation, wondering if I might be turned down. She said, "Well, it is your own money, after all."

I'm gonna be getting $870.00/month for the rest of my life, or until the government goes bankrupt, whichever comes first. =:-O
