Aren't most/many of those datasheets cribbed from the PartMiner FreeTradeZone website? They spent $millions collecting, scanning and organizing all those old datasheets. Isn't that a ripoff?

Most of the datasheets on FreeTradeZone are copyright by the original manufacturers. Only the copyright holder has been "ripped off".

I see arguments made about folks who sell manuals downloaded from BAMA on E-bay. The guy who originally scanned the manual and uploaded it to BAMA (for free distribution) feels violated because he did the work of scanning etc. But legally only the copyright holder (the author or manufacturer he worked for) has any rights to collect damages. (And the middle guy may be found liable if anyone ever cares to drag it to court.)

Not that I have any judicial powers, but I'd grant more leniency to those who give away old manuals/datasheets than I would to those who made a business of selling other people's IP.

We think many of the datasheets have been copied from our site datasheetarchive.com. We noticed that some users were downloading up to

10,000 pdf documents per day earlier this year. Then suddenly datasheet4u appeared. They even copied our logo and color scheme. Our site now uses a download count to prevent this type of ripper software.

Datasheet4u.com claim to have 882,902 but really have 499,282 documents. You can verify this by entering wildcards into their search. Not very much data compared to the rest. I dont think they'll last.

I dont think they will get away with copying data from partminer either.

Out of curiosity, how many of those are copyrighted by datasheetarchive.com? I just picked a few at random and they were copyright by Intel, Motorola, RCA, Intersil, etc., with no indication that the copyrights had been transferred to datasheetarchive.com.

I have nothing against making old datasheets available. It's a great idea, and helps me and others a lot. And as far as I've seen the original manufacturers don't seem to care (although HP vs BAMA last month was an issue for a while). I'm just curious about the assumption that partminer etc. are the copyright holders.

Those are protected by trademark.

Yes. We cant copyright something that is not ours. Our database and collection are probably protected by copyright though. Wasn't searchdatasheets.com shut-down for copying the partminer database?

Creating a new datasheet4u site which is just a partial copy of datasheetarchive.com doesn't really benefit the end user.

Hey Win,

What was the part number of that ancient wonderful GE symmetric zener thing?

I made no such assumption. But one is finding their hard work grabbed for free and put up, without attribution, all over the web, as can be seen by observing the annotations they made for their files.

A few datsheets here or there may well be fine, but this massive borrowing simply serves to discourage them from making the huge effort in the first place. It's wrong, and in the end it can hurt us all. Just my two cents.
