I don't know how Larkin offended him to deserve this. I better watch out as well, since i might be next. But please don't just give up on the group. There are still some nice people around. We just have to ignore the noises.

Interesting. That statement is quite informative... you don't read Larkin's posts ?:-)
Did you measure that field current yet ?:-) ...Jim Thompson

I suppose it was the wrong beer. I should have sent....

I don't read everything, but I remember a huge argument over relays. I thought relays were fascinating when I was ten, and it was quite surprising to see they matter so much to you guys that nobody could let it go.

I guess so.

The modern sealed surface-mount telecom relays are great. Nothing comes close for extreme signal switching. I especially like the latching versions... zero power consumption and no thermals.
The geezers like to argue about the cosmic meanings of words, like "zero" and "infinite." I like to test and design with relays.
John
When I was at Bell Labs, (1948-1951), there was an "old timer" who had designed a calculator for complex numbers which used only relays. It could add, subtract, multiply and divide complex numbers. I don't remember the accuracy, but it was to several decimal places.
Of course it was very slow. Some of the standard relays used in the telephone plant had many contacts, so involved logic circuits were possible.
-- Virg Wall
-- Yeah, that was a classic! What happened was that Larkin posted that latching relays have infinite gain and, when he was corrected, his inability to admit to his error made for quite an interesting thread.
Show us a WORKING schematic, John L. WHY don't you ever do that, you fraud? ...Jim Thompson

Did your killfile crash again? Or did you get tired of peeping by proxy?
I post all sorts of schematics, from goofy ideas to stuff in production. If you can't remember the complete ones, with parts values and all, we'll forgive you. Short-term memory is the first thing to go.
Stupid old git, claiming you've killfiled me and simultaneously whining about what I've *not* posted.
John
Corrected? They do have infinite gain.
You need something to amuse you. You don't do much electronics.
John
You just don't play the violin as well as this young person.
And how old did you say you were? 70+ ?
Jamie
-- I agree. I even used them as replacements for high voltage vacuum relays until airplanes started falling out of the sky. Oops...
-- We???
Pushing "H" on Agent gives me the reference, saves me snipping... I don't want to tire myself out ;-)
Perhaps Larkin can enlighten us by citing Message-ID's ??:-)
Wonder what it's like, living such a fraudulent life as Larkin? ...Jim Thompson

John, remember where you are posting. Nobody will let you get away with that. I *understand* what you mean, but that will not matter.
They will say that *any* input power to change the contacts will result in finite gain except out to infinite time (and I'm not even sure about that).
Again, I understand what you are getting at and I think most here understand it too. But don't expect any leniency from them.
John
Leniency? From a pair of old hens and what army? How are they proposing to punish me... killfile?
John
-- Nope, not even if time goes on forever will the power required to switch the relay go to zero.
You know what I mean. Maybe I used the wrong word. Concession? What would you like. What I meant was they won't cut you any slack.
Better?
John
