OT My second electric bike

IIRC the limit in Australia was just increased from 200W to match the EU standard of 250W. Above that it needs to be licensed and operated as a motorbike.

You can buy bicycle hubmotors of around 1000W, assuming those aren't just Chinese marketing watts.

here the legal limit is 250W

Plus a high-side drive mechanism that can cope with automotive transients.

And not subject to automotive-level transients. ...Jim Thompson

Here the power is inconsequential.. The max speed is what they place a limit on.

BTW... Seems like that's not needed on the second bike. I don't know why, but it's a good thing.

You can see it on my picture page (from the link above).

Ugly. Throttle control in the wrong place. Very slow, top speed about 11 miles per hour but with excessive low-end torque. The gearing could have been changed, but the drivetrain abuse concern might have increased.

But it served me well for 10 months, including on some extremely hot days (95+ degrees Fahrenheit). Only one failure that was very easy to fix.

About 1 mile per amp hour. Therefore two five amp hour batteries is about 10 miles. But that's going very easy on it.

Now I'm using a more powerful brushless cordless drill (Dewalt DCD995) that supposedly is 57% more efficient than a brushed motor. It's definitely more powerful, the top speed is much higher. When I get a chance, I'll test the miles per amp hour. But there are a few more things to clean up. Need a high-rise handlebar, a new hub, and a few other things.

A friction motor is not for the long haul. You don't want to power the bike by rubbing against the wheel, not for serious use.
