Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, Don Lancaster is from...

Somewhere between Saturn and Neptune is the best prevailing opinion.

Seriously, Don inhabits a different world than most of us regular workaday people. He forms opinions, biases and prejudices and once set is completely impervious to any known form of change. Worse, he makes these opinions known continually and regards those who disagree as, well, stupid.

Never mind that these are often nutty.

I've read Don's columns in electronic and computer magazines for decades and at one time thought if Don said it, it must be so. Growing up is partly the process of learning that the grown-ups are just as wrong as you are sometimes, I guess.

Anyone have any particular favorite Lancasterisms thaat particularly peeve them?

You're a jerk. Take your personal problems to a shrink. If Lancaster bothers you, it's you who has the problem, not him.

Absolutely.

I've got a Usenet rule: I killfile names in subjects, because they're

*always* targets of trolls. The name "Don Lancaster" is now in my subject killfile. I'll see posts from Don, just not posts baiting Don. Ty's in there, Lumpy's in there, even my own name is in my subject killfile. I doubt I've missed anything worth reading.

What? And let jerks like you work your smarmy little smear job on Don? No way. This doesn't call for a light hand.

Let's see, that would be the auto maker and the water meter company.

I don't see his ideas as being really nutty, but he does have some funny names for things, like "Magic Sinewaves" and "Gurugrams."

But the reason I have respect for Don is he's right more than half the time, and that's NEVER true of actual nuts. I do wonder why he spent so much time writing raw postscript code, though.

One thing of his that's always worked for me is the "Active Filter Cookbook." You'd think it would be obsolete with Spice on computers and such, but the thing is it's all there, you pick out your slope, what curve you want, and here are the values, just scale them for whatever frequency and impedance you want (presuming the opamp will operate in the circuit within its specs, and he talks about that too).

I dunno, my major complaint is with him being such a famous electronics author and all, I thought my First Printing TTL Cookbook would have sold by now, even in its crappy condition. What would be a fair price for it? I've obviously been asking too much for it.

Let's see, how many people don't know Uranus is between Saturn and Neptune???? Probably smarter than the average Jensen, I'd speculate.

So a "Tinaja Quest" is his codeword for going to see the alien bodies? (and I don't mean the ones that didn't quite make it from Mexico) I always wondered about that.
