MAX4581

Jun 22, 2010 11 Replies

I've had a request to quote the design of a pin-for-pin replacement of the MAX4581.

Not being on the buying side of such stuff, is this really a hard-to-get part?

It's not a terribly difficult thing to design (I did the ON-Semi re-do of the 4051-52-53 series many years ago), but I'm suspicious that I'm being used as a price-reduction tool :-) ...Jim Thompson

Michael

Digikey stocks them

,not in any significant quanttities. Maxim shows them as still in production as well

so I think your suspicions are correct.

So if they're $0.63 in 1k quantities... and Jim can spin a design such that they cost, oh, say, $0.33... seems like someone must be using upwards of

100k/year to make it worth the NRE costs? Intriguing...

Maybe an Audio product. 5mhz bandwith is too low for todays video. But the L datasheet mentions DSL, perhaps Telco/STB related.

Cheers

I think you might die from the boredom of designing the part.

I'm looking at the datasheet. The THD dips around 60hz. That sure looks suspicious, like a 60hz filter was switched in.

Jim Thompson Inscribed thus:

Are these not a second source for the HC74C family.

Best Regards: Baron.

Well if they are still available at Digikey and you can also get them from Newark with a lead time why else would someone want him to do it other then hopeing he will give them a better price.

The part is also listed as still in production from Maxim as well. If it wasnt still in production yea I could understand the request.

And being used as a price-reduction tool is all that bad?

Not if you get paid for your time in preparing a quote.

Hmm... Maxim has a myriad of MAX4581 types for sale,

so I can hardly imagine there's no one available that meet your customers requirements. Can't get another idea then the the one you already have: Pricing.

Not in the online catalogs for Farnell or RS here.

Pin for pin 405x series? Why not use 'hc405x instead for low voltage?

Grant.
