A lot of it does indeed come down to how much does one consider one's time to be worth.
Like running around throughout the house, cutting new fittings when they are not necessarily needed.
I'd go to each jack and take a reading, and replace only those fittings that show a large drop in signal. Saves time and money.

With a small lathe, you could make a ferrule in a few minutes. I don't know what you'd do about the center conductor ... maybe something that crimps?

'F' connectors are only one type of CATV connector. There is also the 'G' series that push on, and all the hardline connectors with 5/8"
27 TPI threads.The 'G' series connectors are used to plug modules into the base plate inside the amplifier housings and some taps or directional couplers.

I have a piece of CATV hardware which, inside the unit's plugin modules were bulkhead F connectors, running from the chassis to the circuit board with what feels like 75 ohm, teflon RG-174 sized stuff. Crimped F connectors; wires attached to board by tying a loop of wire around the shield, soldering it, and soldering the (now three) pins into the board itself.

Not always easy. The cheap only (thinner steel) actually work better but I've had situations where only the "good stuff" was in stock. We needed pliers to take the off :-(
Not the 3.5mm or 2.5mm things that computers have as sound card connectors. They are horrible, losing GND all the time, crackling etc.

$9.73 for 25 isn't exactly cheap. Also, we usually need something where we could order thousands and where there is a chance for 10-20 year supply stability.
F-connectors only work for bulky stuff such as quad-shield.

Anyhow, those work for "regular" coax with a stiff center conductor because the center conductor becomes the pin. Doesn't work with stranded versions.
They make them but they are usually only sold molded on to a cable. I've got two such cables here, very thin coax, nice for stringing through the sun umbrella under which the patio TV would be at night to watch the news.
Thing is, F-connectors aren't very practical for client's systems when you have 30-40 connections all right next to each other. Can't turn the nut on the connectors.
