There are loads of places like that. PA, for long stretches along I-80 is another. That *is* the boonies. The UP of Michigan is like that too, but there is something going on with the iron in the ground there. It too is in the middle of nowhere but the noise floor seems to be sky high. ;-) I'm sure there are places in the West that are a thousand miles from nowhere too. You're just used to the very densely packed left coast.

I do sometimes. The payoff has to be big, but occasionally it is.

And sometimes a part will just work a lot better than the datasheet suggests, because the manufacturer doesn't care to test for some spec. For example, parts that are spec'd for uA leakages sometimes have fA leakages in real life. Parts that are supposed to be slow rectifiers or transistors turn out to be dynamite step-recovery diodes.

We use a lot of one schottky diode that's rated for 2 volts reverse. That's silly, but it's intended as an RF detector so that's a good enough datasheet spec. They're fine at 5 or 6 volts.

Hmm, I once did travel clear across America, mostly on I-80. The AM band was a steady companion. Later when I drove there again there even were some in AM-stereo. Anyone remember that?

Not really, I am 100 miles away from S.F. and this is actually a staunchly Republican stretch of CA. Not that it'll help us much, but just for the record :-)

I think the only AM station of significant power out here is KFBK (Rush Limbaugh) but the AM band is rather full. 80% in English, I'd say, 15% Spanish and the rest is in all sorts of languages. To my surprise even Portuguese but no German, even though there's more German-speaking folks here than from Portugal or Brazil. When you cross over the mountains here and then head across Nevada towards Utah it gets pretty darned lonely. Never had a problem with AM there either.

I haven't looked, not sure if police departments really split that up into categories. Thing is, marijuana intoxication is not easily detected. Yeah, a trained officer will see it in the eyes but that's not proof in court.

WRT smoking at home, I have a slightly different opinion there. In the Netherlands I've seen it to be just the entry step towards hard drugs, and then people fried their brains or died. I've met many of them, sad stories. Sure, that can also happen with alcohol but typically there is still a chance for help. With many hard drugs there really isn't, it just goes too fast. You have an officer show up at the door with some paperwork and a sad look in the eyes.

Maybe it can. There's all sorts of software that came with it. Some useful, some of the ham radio stuff totally useless. I haven't touched much of that yet because I use this receiver for EMI detection.

It can also happen with tobacco -- while research on marijuana tends to be minimal so it's hard to be definitive, it seems to be that tobacco is generally more addictive and more harmful to the body than mairjuana is. So I suspect that if you banned tobacco and made weed legal, you'd probably actually hve fewer people ending up on hard drugs, lower medical bills, and so on.

Not that I think smoking tobacco, marijuana, or anything else is at all a good idea, mind you.

I've heard that a lot, also from medical professionals. It's not the risk of lung cancer, that may really be lower with weed, it's the question whether the weed user does the "next step" and what that will be. Some are simply peer-pressured into the next drug on the potency scale. "Hey, dude, try this, it's cool stuff". That is what killed the son of my landlady.

Yeah. Same for alcohol, or some food items where a cardiologist would frown. But don't take away my olive loaf slices at lunchtime :-)
