For EMI testing you could probably also use a talking house transmitter from a realtor and get really close to the antenna base, like a foot or so.
Are you sure your AM radio is up to snuff? Most stations around us are
10-50kW and even here inside a lab with lots of aluminum sheeting in the walls I can hear plenty of them crystal clear. And I have some nasty switchers on test boards going right now.
Buy a cheap one, better safe than sorry. Then you can always buy a better or fancier one later.

I have trouble getting AM here though I'm maybe only 20 miles from the main antenna array. Two mountain ranges in between plus electrical noise :-(
That's why I got the Soundbridge.

I can see November from my house :-)
Aren't those FM? The problem was only reported on equipment being used in the Medowlands, under at least four 50kW antennas. I'm surprised it didn't melt. ;-)
I have five AM radios (two cars, and three around the house). There isn't anything over 1kW within 50mi.
I should. The air-raid sirens are pretty good, though.
Oh, then you almost have to design to HEMP guidelines :-)
Sometimes I enjoy designing for such harsh environments. Like where you take a 28V design, plug it into a 120V mains outlet and nothing happens. Or place it on the lawn in a fierce thunderstorm, uncle Leroy's pine tree goes up in flames and it keeps on working.
Ok, that's considered "the boonies" even though you are on this side of the Klondike :-)
Yep, as long as there is power. At least some supposedly aren't on battery backup.

Hmm, where I come from they don't call it "design". It's called "growing". ;-)
Except that we had no chance to design anything. The extent of the design was to put a cap across the mic input. No research, no testing (and no chance of it working).
I suspect that there is no money in AM and enough FM bandwidth to please all comers.
They are supposed to be. They don't tell you the secret code so no one knows what's happening. Dumb.
I have the Midland WR-100 with S.A.M.E. It is programmable to get the local NOAA station and alerts. They are available at a lot of local supermarkets for $20 around here. They, and some TV stations got together to be able to sell them at that price.

enough left over to pay them.
The problem is that Clear Channel and a couple other companies own most AM stations and they are either run on full automation, of a remote feed over satellite. Most have had their studios ripped out. Some are nothing more than a transmitter site with a Ku band dish. Local ownership is pretty much a thing of the past after the original owners died and they were sold to investors who are too cheap to pay a full time engineer, or even buy repair parts till they are off the air.
After the flood in Nashville earlier this year, WSM had to set up a temporary studio at their transmitter site. It was built in 1934 and had never had any emergency facilities. From the way they talk, they are using the Engineer's small office. The building was built before Air Conditioning, and they have to turn off the window A/C because of the fan noise.

There is a ballot in CA, trying to legalize it. Spooky. I bet we'll see a lot more stoned drivers and really bad accidents.
Ouch, that's not good. I had a few cases where clients tried to cobble everything together with COTS modules and I had to tell them that it ain't gonna work that way, or at least not for long. Was hard, but I had to.

Plenty of money in it here. Much of it is talk radio, and some of that is pretty darn good. Has certain politicians squirming in their seats because the media tends to unearth a lot of dirty laundry.

I scanned the AM dial again today at lunch. I can get four stations during the day (though one is on the fringe, being 40 miles away in GA). Two are likely in the class above. The other two are independent (incl. the one in GA) and have a talk format.
I bet they love that!
I see the Opry and hotel is opening back up soon, if it hasn't already. AIUI the stage was under 10' of water.
I see that. The governator is doing you folks another big favor. He turned out to be a big help to the state, though I guess anything is better than Grayout Davis.
They want to use components outside their specs too. I refused to sign the ECO.

Two of the four AM stations have a talk format (often sports, but this is SEC country). Two of the FM stations have a talk format too, but one seems to be a repeater of one of the AM stations. A lot of these are on the fringes and the reception isn't great.
There is money in radio, for sure, but if you can get an FM assignment there is far more. I agree about talk radio. I listen to it all the time. Some of it is pretty entertaining, too.
There isn't much around here (Best Buy may carry one) and I've looked at the Fry's in Atlanta. I haven't found anything that I would want seen in my house. They're *ugly*.
About as much as the people here enjoy dimmie's trolling.
The Opry House is open. They did their first show there last Thursday. Apparently, the WSM studios aren't ready yet. It was on the main level of the hotel.

Well, whatever will come out of this I am not at all for legalizing pot. I've seen first hand what happens when living in the Netherlands for about six years.

Occasionally I use parts in whacky ways, too, but I do not exceed abs max data. And usually I have that blessed by the mfg.

I really don't understand the dearth of stations there. Occasionally I have to travel through rather lonely stretches of land. Never had a situation where there wasn't a nice big selection of AM stations even though the ECU of my car lets off a wee EMI up there that covers the whole band.

Mine's under the table, has a little cigarette-pack sized control pod and can also be controlled via PC. It's mostly used for EMC jobs though, like right now.

Tell that to the grieving relatives of this couple:

A guy up in WA state once told how he smoked pot while driving long stretches through eastern WA state, a pretty boring drive. He said "after a while some features of the road were just flying above the car, and that kept on happening for hours, cool!". Yeah, right. I am glad I never met this guy while driving, and I think smoking pot and driving is a recipe for disaster.

Well, shouldn't driving while stoned be treated the same as driving drunk, then? Or, for that matter, impaired on any substance?
Or texting? >:->
And again, if somebody's stoned but not driving while stoned, why criminalize just sitting at home stoned, maybe watching TV, or eating leftover pieces of fried squash??
