Like all statistics it all depends on how you define the terms. I also question the $25k number. There is a lot of prison infrastructure that does not show up in their "per inmate" cost reported. Take the total "corrections" budget and divide it by the number of inmates and you get a much bigger number. School boards are also notorious for this kind of funding deception.

That grim attitude is typical of people who are dissatisfied with their lot in life.

That's not a good costing. You need to look at the incremental cost - how much does it cost/save to add/remove one prisoner-year. You need to allow for the societal cost of releasing them - a burglar may cost society more free than in prison if he is still committing crimes and buying drugs.

But imprisoning bong sniffers is a calamitous waste of money.

This has been true for centuries.

People do not want to think that they have actual control of their lives or post life (i.e. death).

The political powers know this. And they will use that knowledge for their own power grabs.

So, do not tell the believers that they are believing in make-believe, they don't want to hear it.

So, we have people who want to believe in something and politics who want control of those people.

How can it get any easier.
