is a report about a man who died while trying to steal copper in Orlando yesterday. His girlfriend and other friends were sobbing about how wrong it was that he died, and how honest and hard he worked to clean up construction sites. The man was a stupid thief who won't be stealing any more copper.

An ordinary day in Florida ?:-)

Today's news has two different power company workers being shocked by the primaries in two different cities.
From the top of a power pole too.
Killed by Darwin with stupidity more like !

I didn't realise that US politics were that electrifiying.

I've lived here in central Florida for 20 yrs,and all 3 of the hurricanes I endured (so far) came in the space of a month and a half. Coupla near-misses a few years before that.
Other than the 8ga ground wire going up the pole, I didn't realize there was any copper on a pole. I thought it was all 1350 aluminum until you got to the transformer. I suppose all that fat telcom and TV cable is copper but you are getting a lot more plastic than metal. We had a bunch of 200 pair phone cable once (found in the dump) and gave up after a while trying to extract the copper. The stuff we burned was rejected by the scrap guy for being too "dirty". Stripping it by hand was more work that mowing lawns or any other way of making a couple bucks..
On that same page is a list of "most popular stories!"

It could have been just a moment of madness.
Does that mean that a half pun comes from a half wit?
Both utility company workers ended up in the hospital.
Do you think anyone stupid enough to stand on one conductor to cut another is smart enough to know what's inside the jacket? Anyway, most phone and CATV lines in Orlando are underground these days.
BTW, CATV trunk line is aluminum, with about a one mil plating on the center conductor. You would have to pull down and refine miles of it to bet a few ounces of copper. CATV drop wire has a steel center conductor with an equally thin copper plating.
That was my reaction, too.
