Not the geography, just the poliitcs. If we get into any of these tribal wars the result will be essentually the same, whether it is Liberia, Somalia, or Iraq. We might be able to throw our bodies between the rival factions until enough GIs get killed, then we will leave and the bloodbath will resume. Vietnam was my war and when we left millions were killed. We could have come home in 1965 and had the same result. The same will be true in any of these places. I think the US should pull out all of their troops everywhere and let all these other monday morning quarterback countries show us how they would do it.

Not really true. We held fire bases on the tops of hills and we held some cities but we never actually tried to hold the country in the way we did in WWII

But simply bombing never really wins a war. Two Nukes in 1942 would not have stopped Japan. Probably the dumbest "bombing" war was the 10 years we bombed Iraq, Sudan and the other targets of opportunity from 1991 and 2001. On 9-11 Islam fired back at us and showed we were not the only people who could bring death from the skies. You notice all of GBU25 camera shots of bombs going into buildings stopped suddenly after 9-11.

The biggest change that made it easier was moving all the federal agents from crime to the drug war.
